Gen 3 outback advice

Post by mullet » Wed Mar 12, 2008 6:23 pm

Guys I have just had a look at a 2000 my01 out back limited auto leather twin sun roofs ect ect going for 15k . Body and interior is imaculent . Engine has a oil leak whick looks like to me between the gearbox and the engine ? 163000 on the clock one owner full service history country driving. Has had a hayman reece tow hitch on it which concerns me as to what was towed with it ,rego is due next month and rear tyres will need replacing soon . Waiting on a trade price on my brumby which i would think they will offer around 3k . The car is in a subi dealership and has been there since before christmas. Does this sound like a good deal ?

hmmm....sounds 'ok' to me.

leak between engine and gearbox usually means the Rear main seal (smack in the middle of the Driveplate kind of area). which is a gearbox out job to try and do which would cost a bit of time and/or money.

altho at those K's i wuldnt expect it to be leaking yet which culd still mean it is something else. maybve coming from above and dripping thru.

and not actually knowign what they usually go for or much else abotu them cant say much else.

it seems a tad on the cheap side...check the head gasket....famous on early 2.5's.....

have u driven it?? if its a heavy hitch it may have been used to tow big caravan or something the like..which u might want to bounce around the corners of the car and see how to struts respond etc..... listen for bearings and CV's

i know plenty of people who fit those towbars to their cars for the ease of changing / removing the attachment, i have one of those hitches in the shed to fit to my fairlane, and will be having one fitted to my outback when i get it.

as for the oil leak, at those km's it should still be great, so it would be of concern.....perhaps see if the yard will fix it as part of the deal??

Get the rear main/whatever that leak is as part of the deal.

It wouldn't be headgaskets, that was the earlier DOHC EJ25D in the 97 and 98 models.
That car has a SOHC EJ251, and are usually (as long as services where done and it was looked after) very reliable.
