I run ea81 (91 brumby) on BP ultimate. I know its expensive but the car just runs so well on it and I haven't had to touch the engine save for a brief experiment with E10 (Blah) Car just seems to run well and I'm sure its getting further on a tank but havn't done the science. Have done about 60-70thou on same plugs etc..touched nothing
Used to use 97 or higher on my EA81. Much better performance and it makes up for the extra cost in fuel economy.

Last couple of weeks ive been trying a few different types out of curiosity for my Brumby! Ive always used BP ultimate for my 351 clevland which is apparently the fuel of chioce for many enthiusiasts. BP ult in the brumby i got 430kays off about 44litres, mostly highway with small trips to the shops etc. I then tried Caltex 95ron and get 460 kays doing pretty much exactly the sam trips ie work shops. Im yet to try the caltex 98. Also, i believe the timing and detonation may be an issue, in theory the premium fuels should be better but if the timing isnt appropriate it may affect ignition etc!
Fuel stats
I usually fill up from matilda but a mate has suggested i swap tp maybe bp or caltex as they are usually a bit better he reckons. Just put a tank of premium from matilda in but havent used it all yet.

EA81 on BP Ultimate

I should clarify this a bit...I bought my 91 EA81 brumby a few years back with 201,000klms on it and it was completely original and in very good condition..
I run it on BP ultimate only and find it runs extremely well on this. If I run it on standard unleaded I find it pings and rattles badly. I realise that this is mostly timing and detonation issues but I'm happy with it on the BP Ultimate so left it at that cos it runs so beaut. I had a small experimentation with E10 probably about 2 years ago and the car just stopped one day dead in the middle of Toowoomba. I removed and stripped the carby and found that the jets had scale (Prob from moisture buildup) on them. Blew it all out, emptied the tank and filters (both) and went back to BP ultimate, no problems since.
The car has the original spark plugs (When I bought it), no timing has been touched, exhaust or anything else. It gets an oil change, renew oil filter (and air cleaner once) . I periodically change the coolant with castrol (small bottle) and that's it.
Just before this thread appeared, I was at the local tip (Probably dumping my tarp) and thought how quiet and smooth it was idling. I've been with it out to Longreach and back from Toowoomba, and out to Windorah towards Birdsville and back. Many times to Brisbane and the Sunshine coast and over to Bundaberg. Also up to Wandowan all playing guitar. It has never stuck me up and as I have said, nothing on the engine has been touched bar basic oil and coolant change.
They are a great little ute. My avatar is changing a wheel between Quilpie and Charleville.
So yes, I carry tools but this brumby just keeps on going..and I'll stay on the BP Ultimate...just turn your back on the bowser and don't watch the dollars go round.
