Hi there, i hope this introduction is in the right place, whilst the layout of this forum is similar, i'm not finding it as easy to navigate as my honda forum :P
My name is James, im 22 from Hobart. I'm in the process of getting my Honda Prelude VTiR for sale and will soon be on the market for a mid to late 90's model impreza stationwagon.
Aside from the obvious checking the oil cap for sludge, engine ticking noises and CV clunking, i was wondering if you guys and girls could tell me any subaru caricatures to look out for in these models.
I'm keeping it on the cheap, preferably under 9k, and must be 4WD, 2.0L, Stationwagon and Manual.
I'll most likely make a trip to VIC as i did with my current car for the purchase, as this model impreza is very rare in Hobart and expensive.
These are a couple im eyeing at the moment, just to give you an idea:

My family has owned 3 subies. A late 80's model stationwagon, the boxy ones. A '95 WRX, which i loved the look of, hence why want this shape of impreza and a 97 liberty, which is on its 3rd engine! I'm not so keen on those.
Sorry this was so long, i look forward to hearing from you....or being flamed :P
James

Mate, Firstly welcome to the Forums. Secondly, I had one of these Sportswagons (the one in the link above) and it was a great car. I had one for about 5 years, and bought another Subie. But these sportswagons are brilliant, and you can't go wrong with them (or any Subaru for that matter).jaymz_maiden wrote:

Good luck with the purchase and please keep us updated with which car you buy.

This vehicle is going to be a workhorse and nothing more. I will take it offroad every so often for camping trips, but it is mainly to cart around my bike and kayak, as i now have a very active lifestyle and my 2 door coupe prelude is too impractical. This car won't be for street by any means, my prelude was and i'm over it and want cheap motoring from now on.
Good to know! I know a thing or two about subie's but im sure there's plenty i don't aswell!aware wrote:Mate, Firstly welcome to the Forums. My mechanic has told me from the subaru's he's worked on that impreza's are some of the most reliable. I was looking into liberty's too, but our's like i said is on its 3rd engine after the original did the big end bearing, and the second one the piston seals were rooted (i think). Current engine is going strong though and very willing.
Interesting as the engine is of the same design etc and and if if was a faulty bearing unusual but other engines with similar issues that's more than bad luck!
Although I prefer the look of the impressas I think the liberty is set up a little better for my usage.
