Next time someone is getting rid of a gearbox, ask for the input shaft, perfect aligning tool.

Steptoe, are the Exeedy clutches available here or would you have to import it?
The US really do get a better deal than us, esp on the price of identical TBelts. I'm up for my Tbelt soon, will most likely ship it from the states to save some $$$

Yeah exceedy here but not ever seen a tool come through with any brand of clutch kits for anything. My thoughts on clutch kits from US is freight is a killer to get it here. To negotiate and pester local supplier for a keen price could be pretty close and less trouble when something arrives broken - like the little spring retainer clips ear on throwout bearing carrier

Sorting out my hoses today and figuring out what's what on the inlet manifold. The crossover pipe is quite corroded (the one coming from thermostat housing) but still usable. Looks like this part is pressed into the manifold, so what can I do to preserve it and prevent it from rusting further? Also all of the tiny coolant outlets poking out of the block and manifold are in similar condition, also pressed in. I think I'll replace these with threaded brass connections when I come to doing the car properly.
Then there's the issue of all 6 manifold bolts gone missing in the 9 months of inaction
Will any M8 bolts of correct length work? The originals are always that goldie color which I always associated with the high tensile bolts, but the way they snap so easily suggests otherwise

Never mind, this engine won't be running any time soon. In fact now it has to come out again and be completely torn down; distributor gear has been destroyed.
Since I couldn't put the manifold on I decided to align the dizzy and install it, pretty easy you'd think. I turned the engine over by hand till #1 was at TDC and did the usual thing with the dizzy moving it to slightly before #1 fires so when the gear slides in it all lines up. It went in without a problem, great. Put in the single hold down bolt and all was well. Then I turned the engine over by hand 1 revolution of the dizzy. About half way through the dizzy started to get pushed out, bending the holding down plate. Strange I thought so I pulled the dizzy out again and the gear at bottom was covered in metal shavings and big burrs pushed up around the edge of each tooth...
Looked down the hole and there's a neat pile of shavings next to the gear in which every tooth is completely destroyed, with a big chunk missing to boot

What is it with you and religeous events ?!
The goldy colour is gold zinc me thinks, and any M8 same pitch will do. I have some stainless studs I use to align spider manifold, then remove and fit correct bolts.

OK, seen this in 4.0 litre Falcon engines when aftermarket distributors have gone in as a fix to stuffed factory dizzy on EL. Was seeing a few a year and one engine swap centre guru worked out it was in the drive cog and think was swapping the old factory dizzys cog onto new aftermarket. He was making money from this problem so never reported his suspicions.
The dizzy cog must be harder than the jack shaft as it is another jack shaft needed to fix and a factory dizzy from the wrecker
These donks had a dinosaur link in that even though they were OHC, still had a jack shaft to drive dizy and oil pump.
As for what happened to yours , as you describe it was pushed up and out of the block bending the hold down plate.
Gona try and make you feel a little better ....with my last EA81 rebuild, discovered my torque wrench was falling to bits after it was all in and running - had nightymares about the conrod bolts to head bolt tensions. Pulled it all down again to find all was fine. On assembly I turned crank with one hand, finger was too close to cam/crank meshing gears and the uncut speedisleeve was there to help squash and slice my finger at the same time.
Effin, blood coming out of me in bulk, wrapped dirty rag tight ! and drove self to hospital. Think I really coulda done with the O2 before I got there, got it as soon as they saw me and when the stitches came out !!

Yep just one revolution of the dizzy by hand. I thought maybe the drive cog on the crankshaft was back to front, but checking the old engine they look to be the same orientation. It's the gear on the crankshaft that is destroyed.

Yeah the gears for the camshaft are at the back but the distributor gear is at the front on the crankshaft. I'm at a loss as well, I thought these gears were hardened steel and to be completely destroyed in one turn...doesn't make any sense. I didn't feel anything unusual when turning it over either, just went around smoothly and this was the result.
But I'm glad I find this now instead of when firing the engine up for the first time...imagine the carnage

Both the electronic and points dizzy's are shaped (spiral gears?) The electronic dizzy was on this engine originally, comparing the two they are all but identical apart from a small difference in the shape of the location shaft (alloy part)TOONGA wrote:points dizzy and electronic dizzy are a straight swap in the ea81 motors. is the cog on that dizzy straight toothed or shaped?

Like I said I've installed a dizzy on these engines more than once. I didn't do anything differently so there must have been something wrong with the engine to begin with, but the gear looks the same orientation as my old engine ruling out the back-to-front possibility.
