Yep, because there was never a towing weight givin for the old subie thats the rules I guess.
I've sold my Brumby now so I don't have to worry. I don't think I would of towed any more then about a tonne with it though. I've seen what happens when your trailer takes control. It kills.

Well now people are on the right track but the rules do vary from state to state and although a vehicle with twice the weight may have exactly the same brake setup and tyre footprint the towing capacities are different i.e. the same stopping power for a combination of 3 tonne will stop better than something with the same an 4 tonne. But without trailer brakes the trailer when heavier can often decide where the car goes instead of the other way around!

Bringing back an old thread but what would peoples opinions be for towing a Forester (1350kg's) or Outback (1500kg's) on a car trailer behind a stock L-Series?
Taking it very very easy of course or is it just stupid to even try?

Not sure its exactly stupid Taza. Least not from a purely mechanical point of view. But its illegal. Full stop.

Doesn't mean I would not do it short distance etc. But u need to understand the consequences before u do. Ignorance won't get u out of trouble .

It is A LOT of momentum you will need to deal with. 1,500kg + trailer (say) 750kg behind a half-chassis 20 year old car with front discs...

Reckon one of those two wheeled car transporters (if they are in WA) would be wise investment.

The fine alone from Mr Plod would cover it!

I know it's been done before, but it's not something I would consider.

You've driven the L series, you know the brakes - will they pull up 1800kg without brake fade everytime??

It's worth the money to pay someone else to do the towing for you if need be - while it might be expensive in the short term, long term it's a pot load cheaper than if something goes pear-shaped - you'll have every book thrown at you then some!

Cheers
