Liberty -
Gen 1 has LX (Basic no power windows/electric antenna a few were 4WD/FWD), GX (had electric antenna/Windows and central locking) again does come both FWD and 4WD. Sedans came with constant 4WD single range, whereabouts wagon came as dual range 4WD, RARELY have single range in Gen1, i've seen only one had single range 4WD, some GXs had mags as factory.
and lastly has luxury model called Heritage.

for Gen 2.
LX EJ22 Base model same as above (a few were FWD/single range AWD & dual range 4WD/AWD.
GX EJ22 same as above.
(Other models were Ski FX ((wagons only) early ones had roof ranks/tow bar on wagons & later models had sun roof as factory & roof ranks/towbar, and Rallye was a sporty model of Liberty GX with body kit & mags.)

RX Luxury EJ25 "GX" model with 2.5 Litre & electronic climate control & body kit/mags. - Came with manual and automatic AWD only. - Manual wagons were dual range AWD - wagons came as single range AWD *not* dual range..

Heritage - was Luxury model - top of the range, has mags & body kit, (early ones had manual climate control whereabouts later ones has electric ones) all came in automatic, none in manuals - Early ones were EJ22 later ones had EJ25.

Cheers

start with a cheapy MY (coupla hundred if you try hard) to experience Subaru engineering, then gain a feel for what you want/like by taking a few L's for test drives. You are getting many and varied opinions here. All the later than MY stuff sort of fits into MY/Brumby shape. Reasons efi are suggested is no carby float to get upset when on steep gradients as well as power, the earlier MY's with the basic EA81 has a lot less parts and not that underpowered compared to EA82 coz they are lighter engine and body.

With turbos - if you know what you're doing it'll be fine but if you don't ie. just jump and drive it and not service it or look after it - then its costly.

Riiiiiight....

Tell that to the guys driving interstate trucks, they never turn off, 16L cummins with turbos the size of a 7L bucket....

Sure, turbos are another link in the chain... But if it were links in the chain that worried you then you best avoid 4wd too...

Point?

My point is that it is an 80's attitude that turbos lead to unreliability. Hands up the last person here that had a failure DIRECTLY relating to the turbo?

Hands up the last person that did a head gasket?
Hands up the last person that holed a radiator?
Hands up the last person that smashed second gear?
Hands up the last person that destroyed a CV?

Diesel or not is irrelevant.

Note to self.....Don't dis turbos.

Q- I've heard that Liberty Wagons have a Viscous Hub thingy which really isn't all that flash if you wanna do some more serious 4wding. (Not just go driving on the beach) Is there a way to combat this that doesn't involve changing the whole driveline?
OR
Shall I stay on my track of buying an L Series, as this is starting to feel (Conversationally) like a more capable off-roader. Not to mention part-time 4B rather than constant AWD.

Thoughts?

My thoughts are 2WD sucks.. :p

It really depends on the offroading you want to do.. Maybe find some videos on youtube and then post up the best ones with the hardest stuff you need to do in your subie and see what we all think..
