Pretty darned unsettling I guess considering that this is such a major event for the area and these terrorists have enjoyed showing their self indulgences on international TV by taking hostages and pointing their guns at several crew members and participants last year. Forcing thousands of participants, backers and $$ out of the country must be a great reward for their pitiful but horrific efforts.
I remember that last year they had to bring in a Russian air ship (called 'the world' I think, to hint at their size) to move the whole shebang out of harms way (bikes, trucks, cars teams, helicopters, the lot), cancelling a stage or two, because of them. I thought that was enough of a hint of how mental these guys are. I guess we can't begin to understand their culture since they've been doing this sort of stuff continuously for centuries.
Today is a very sad day for the business of racing and for my hunger for great rallying TV but those idiot terrorists will see it as a win somehow. That, my friends, is the greatest shame. I'm looking forward to getting out and about even more to experience the fresh air now... feel like going on a drive about now.
Dakar 2008
