Frog, Thunder & Tweety, I totally agree. The fuel consumption figures are "optimistic" at best & spare parts? There's no justification for some of the prices being charged. But they get away with it cos the insurance companies pay for most of the parts bought. But then we pay higher & higher premiums. Grrrr

Best explained here I think
Wow, thats awesome. Love the EK31...a massive 15KW @5000rpm
FB25: 170HP :???:

& the EZ36 has asymmetric conrods! The gods are crazy lol
Silverbullet wrote:Can you honestly say all the fab you-beaut fancy pants modern SUV's out there today get taken onto so much as a muddy track more than once a year? Of course not, everyone likes the ground clearance because they feel safer and like the big car for the same reason and the luxury of it. I can't tell you how much the SUV craze annoys me, they're everywhere these days and little or none of them get used off road. And they just get bigger and bigger every generation, remember the first Rav 4's? Look at them now nearly up to Landcruiser status. Don't forget the old compared to new Foresters, Subaru are guilty as well :(
I'll stick to my MY thanks

*Edit* oh that might have sounded as if I was having a go at someone  Nah I'm not, just the SUV craze is a part of modern life I dislike intensely, along with iPads and other needless trinkets.
+1. Even though I am now the proud owner of an SUV, its a small, light nimble SUV that does get taken offroad. Its not one of these modern styleless SUVs whose only purpose is to pick up the kids, do the shopping & out compete the other mums for most mod cons.

Then there's the BMW & Mercedes SUVs... seriously? Can you imagine them seeing a dirt road let alone actually go offroad!

& it seems the bigger the SUV, the worse the driver!

Those fuel consumption stickers need a better explanation that what sales people have been quoted on here.

I have had them described as very accurate between each other, computer modelled as a comparison betyween cars not as an actual vehicle achieves in real driving conditions.

If you choose between a thrifty 5.8 litres per 100km and a 6.8 litres per 100 vehicle, with your driving the later is likely to give the the economy indicator difference - use a litre more than the former per 100km with your same driving style condition. NEVER expect the figure itself unless you too go do some computer modelling of your vehicle :) , that'd be some virtual driving - boring

Will there be a H6 or FB H6 equivalent available in the future?
Its a little better than plastic, its a reinforced fibre resin that is really heat tolerant. The EZ30 has been using them since the start of Gen4 Libs in 2003 and the EJ20/25 have had them since about 2007. Im pretty sure FHI put a fair bit of R and D into them.

The FB engine is actually more like the EZ30/36 than the old EJ is.

What excites me about the FB engine is that it has been designed for direct injection. The BRZ/Toyota 86 has the FA engine, which is pretty much the same, but has different heads with 2 injectors per cylinder, 1 in the intake port like normal engines and another high pressure injector straight into the top of the piston. I just hope Toyota let Subaru use its D4-S direct injection on other Subaru models

How dare you say that!!! haha I prefer to call them a wagon over an SUV. Thats more the American term (no offence to any americans on here)
Just as I would call an L-Series a wagon and the Brumby a ute not pick-up truck

No I can't but funnily enough I see quite a few Audi Q7'S and Q5'S on the beach and sand. Man they have some torque to with even their smallest 6cylinder engine.

Yeah quite a few times too, maybe 5x or 6x. They seem to go reasonbly well except for the low profile tyres.

Yeah I bet we'd see more higher end vehicles on the beach if we were allowed on the beach over here! We'd probably see a lot more of those SUV things on the beach actually.

Cheers

Looks like the traction control might come in handy with these things. Although this is the old Impreza XV. The new one should be even better!!

Good reading. Having owned a Tigaun diesel auto I cans ee why SUV's are popular. But you have to be careful. For example

I test drove my Tiggy on nice smooth roads. Big mistake not taking it on soem rougher ones the country is adorned with. The ride was harsh- so harsh it helped convince me to sell it. list price $56,000. (optioned up to the hilt) but I got it much cheaper and with the tax incentives a few years ago....

Then Subaru brought out its next 4Wd. I rode in one and it left the VW for dead in nearly every way. Even the Hyundai i35 (4WD) was superior in my view and thousands cheaper.

But what I do know is that although I am disappointed by the lack of individuality Subaru has in their lastest example...if I wanted any new car now, or even used, I by a Subie.

That says everything!

PS Providing the car is economical enough. I drive 70,000kms a year and run a diesel i30 that gets 48mpg even driven fast. So I need that economy.
Are you listening Subaru? Bring back a sherpa retro? jsut a little more power!

Probably not. Most of us are enthusiasts that buy our subi's second hand as the price of a new one is expensive, aftermarket parts for what we want to do are few and far between early on for that model etc. Plus Subaru only make the "luxury" vehicles nowadays rather than the functional practical models they used to...

Forget about the sherpa! Bring back a retro brumby!!!

With the enormous popularity of utes, like Ford, Holden, Hilux, etc, I'm kinda stunned they havent done a Brumby, esp considering its enormous reputation amongst farmers

Just last night I was talking to someone I know who was going to buy a brumby a number of years ago but the trouble and strife wouldn't let him, also said if there was a new brumby he would buy it. So even a few non-Subaru nuts would buy a new Brum!

They'd have to get this new brumby just right - a balance of rough and tough ability with defined hints of it's past while still comfortable enough to entice the average buyer. The other thing to consider is not going for the SUV look and slathering the thing with all things plastic... And keep it smallish yet functional/practical.

It's going to need to mean all things to all people  Good luck to them!

How about this.
A 2 door brumby.
4 door twin turbo diesel.
And an STi Brumby, like the holden Maloo.

They would all sell, i have had people tell me, if only a twin cab, if only a sport, if only the classic.

Cheers Cam

the average buyer doesn't care about a lot other than ipod connectivity and blue tooth. Wonder if ...because they use the Brumby to tug the strings, play on reliability - the ad gurus know the part the Brumby plays in the history of reliability whether that can feed back to Fuji.

Only the other day I had a fella tell me how good they were, some water commissions had them as a fleet, so too CSIRO somewhere and orchards in Victoria for their size and ability, abd even when I've been in touristy spots the old Brum has had the odd girl from all parts of the globe draped over it, stand by it, lean on it .... or throw her bloody rubbish in the tray !!
Maybe they lose legend status if they were remade ??

This this and this!

It must not be just another big SUV with huge low profile wheels and the Brumby name splashed on the tailgate.

The SEC - victorian electrical company used to have them over here too from what I've heard.

This could be very true. But like I was saying, they'd have to get it just right to make it work in the real world!

And one way to get on to feedback to subaru - it's only small but it might mean something - is to comment on their videos on youtube. Subaru Australia.

i think one of the main issues for subaru is that there current mob of cars are seen as more of luxury rather then rugged as what they were back in the 70's and 80's.
steptoe i also wonder the question if they were remade whether they would loose legendary status. maybe if they didn't use the name "brumby"????

i would love to see subaru create a awd diesel brumby that would be ideal. wouldn't need to be dual cab. overall that high or big but just right like the original.
2004 subaru forester -gone
1999 subaru forester- no more :(
1989 subaru brumby- sold!
2008 zook jimny -sold!
2003 mitsubishi pajero - missus car
2013 nissan d22- set up for long distant touring
