Silverbullet wrote:Fantastic job on the heat bending, how easy was it? It looks like it was made for the car
Pretty easy, just heat slowly over a large area always moving the heat gun while applying pressure on the snorkel in the direction you want it to be.

I've found that the sand held the snorkel back, so while it looked perfect when the sand was removed the snorkel was not where I wanted it exactly. I'm about to apply some heat to it to see if it will respond to that well, and to get the head of the snorkel to sit straight.

Still pretty stoked! Can't wait for Paul's jaw to drop when he sees this!

Cheers

Looks like crap.. why would anyone want that on their car?? Might as well remove it now before anyone else gets their eyes burnt !!

Oh and once you've got it off.. just send it to me and I'll get rid of it for you ;)

Thanks mate! It's a very neat fit on the guard, and I was stressing for no reason with the bending - it was straight forward and pretty easy in the end.

Having a spare guard to cut up on the side was the right way to go about it. The blue guard didn't get chopped up any where as much as the spare guard! A couple of holes were not quite in the right spot but that was an easy fix.

Still got a few things to touch up - but that will all come in time...

Cheers

Bennie, that is sweet. I am thinking of putting one on my outback. I was trying to think of how to get it right. Some one else told me to do it like you just did, but to see it done helps so much more.

Nice work mate.

Thanks Rick. It's easy to get right. Really the hardest bit is getting the right unit to begin with. You need to know what's behind the guard if you're pioneering this on a new model. There's a rail that runs down the top of the inner guard that's got to be avoided - it's a structural part of the front end so cutting a hole through it really isn't an option.

But if you can find something that falls short of this rail lower on the guard it'd be a goer - or if the rail doesn't go the whole length (like the L series) you need one that goes past the end of the rail ;)

I reckon I got lucky!

Cheers

Ruby Scoo had her snorkel finally completed - it was currently "just for looks" as I was super (too) keen to get it on her to see what it looks like!

Thanks to my mate Vince for his help again - I'd be no where near this stage without him!

Here's the original adaptor piece from when we first looked at the start of the thread:

Image

Here it is now with the silicone pipe beside it:

Image

Here it is fitted without the guard:

Image

^ Next time I have the guard off I need to put the wiring over the top of this pipe work... next time...

Fitted with guard and snorkel all hooked up - very happy with the results!

Image

While I had this out I shortened the end that's in the air box. The adaptor also copped a lick of matt black paint just to make it look good and stop rust (maybe).

There's less induction noise than what I was expecting - not a bad thing, the exhaust is loud enough!

I spent an extra $60 on this build, $50 for the 90 degree, 3 inch diametre silicone bend and ~$10 on two clamps. I think this brings me up to about $90 all up after you add the nuts and bolts I've purchased as well. Pretty bloody happy with that!

I can only claim that build price due to a mate's Brother, Jesse giving me the snorkel as he didn't need it - it was a hand me along from his mate!

Cheers all for having a look. If you're after a snorkel just have a go at it! The inner guard work is usually the hardest bit to sort out once you've got the snorkel sized up and sorted ;)

Cheers

No change in power - but it does go faster - I've got to stop flooring it! Since it's windows down weather up this way I can't help myself with the induction sound above 4G rpm

No use posting pics of the engine bay - it still looks the same! Here's the input of the snorkel into the factory air box:
