Mazda 2.5 straight 6

Liberty 2.2 'straight' 4
Difference is .3 litres and 2 cylinders, yes the mazda would be a quicker car haha... Doesn't mean its a better car

Those 6 cyl 626's arent too bad on power. They make 123kw compared to a liberty's 2.2L @ 100kw. Overall though the liberty is a much better car to drive and you'll have him left behind around corners due to the AWD system on the liberty.

The Mazda Kl-DE 2.5L is good for 123Kw, weighs 1270Kg but it is only FWD
The Liberty has an 2.2L EJ22, which makes 101Kw, the lib weighs 1400Kg, and has AWD
So... the Mazda may well be quicker, but the lib will be a better handler in bad weather.

Most of the mazda's power is in the higher rev range, so yes it does have more power, but you'll use a lot more fuel to use it.

lib is betta. The still go alrite. Build quality over power in my books
buy a RS and show him what 'fast' is.

Go windy road - see which handles better?
On wet roads - see which handles better?
Towing - which does better?
Gravel Roads - Which handles better?
Fuel - which will be better/last longer?
All above are leading towards AWD Liberty.
But on Liberty - who cares about the power - its the matter of handling!

If you love the adelaide hills, you'd love the RS turbo in the adelaide hills... Would give you a HUGE thrill!
Just watch it with that license... Those boys in blue love collecting them once they've caught up with you

Heres a bit of information that you might want to know. For a period of time the Mazda 626 was also badged as a Ford Telstar. The Ford Telstar got Wheels Car of the Year back in 1992. So if a car claims that title is guess it is a really, really good car. Also my father owned one but decided to downgrade to a Ford Focus the idiot, so ive driven it and it is a very good car. So ultimately the Mazda 626 is a damn good built vehicle, one from the reviews out there two because ive driven it and my concluding judgement is that it is a good car (go for a manual they are better than the Autos alot).
But when you also consider that the Subaru Liberty got Wheels car of the year twice. And that its a little more fun to drive around in, in comparison to the Mazda. So its ultimately its the decision you what to choose. Myself i would choose a Subaru Liberty due to its high build quality standard that all Subaru’s have, also its long lived boxer engines as well superior AWD. Im both a fan of Subaru's and Ford's as well driving both vehicles myself, so this is probably the most unbiased response you are going to get out there cause i like both cars as well as being in them and driving them.
If you want to know which is quicker the Mazda 626 2.5L V6 or the Subaru Liberty 2.0/2.2/2.5L F4. Overall the Mazda would be quicker due to its larger engine, but if you know how to drive the Liberty properly and release the clutch at the right point and nail it. Get no loss of traction. Get the best pick up with the AWD, and flat shift it through the gears, the Subaru might just be the quicker car. Last advice get a manual you will be more satisfied.

would i recognize significant increase in power, remember it'l be an NA

you wont notice a big jomp in power but if you go 2 and half inch with a 4inch cannon like whats on my wagon you will see better performance....i also shaved my heads half a mill too which mad a huge differance...liitle mods count for a lot on an ej motor...if you were up in brissy my mate does the head work very cheap...about $60 a head and you just need to slap them back on...i have contacts for rebuild kits too at great prices

Another thing to think of is stuff like rego and insurance. ON the mazda it will be more expensive as its 6 cylinder compared to the 4 cylinder suby.
I also believe that the suby will have a better resell value down the track when it comes to that time.
Just another angle to look at.
