another REPCO CV shaft stuffed 16months
The only reason I buy REPCO branded CV shafts is their 100,000 km warranty. I might go through three exchanges and my labour to replace them in all that time but wonder if it is worth the hassle and INSULT.
I rebooted a pair of shafts out of my other Brumby and shoved them in my Brumby tonight and new bearings and seals to fix a GROWL. 90minutes on side 2 !!
One shaft was out of warranty early last year and its boots were split. The RHS was knocking on bends for last few months - maybe 20,000km on it too !! . It was the final replacement under warranty in February last year, witth one year to go in warranty. The other side, the REPCO manager succeeded in shaming me expecting a replacement with two months to go - started wanking on about the warranty being pro rata anyway (which it ain't)
I really do not get a good run out of just one of these shafts - it takes a few to get to 100,000km !

I've never had to get new CV's (touch wood), mine click and have been for the last 2 years or so, the latest being the worst due to a split boot - I thought it was on the way out so didn't bother checking til a tyre joint notified me after a new set of tyres were put on the car - they failed to mention a shot ball joint, I'm wondering how they did their front end alignment...

I don't think they touch the ball joints during a wheel alignment, but it would have been nice if they'd noticed torn rubber on it (if it was apparent). It is definitely in the general vicinity of where they work.
Steptoe I've only ever bought CV's and shafts from a dedicated CV joint business. They definitely know their stuff and I've never had any problem with ones I've got off them - ever!

i bought a protex branded one from supercheap in wa and it lasted about 6 months before it either split a boot or started clunking.
ive put together many 2nd hand bits and boots etc. i think its coming time to put two new ones in the front tho.
btw has anyone had any trouble with the rear cv joints? ive still got my original ones in there and they have def copped a beating and no signs of wear. i do know when the break they break good and clean tho

Where abouts are you located Steptoe?
I'm about to try two front shafts from the guy that's selling them on ebay for $100 each. He seems reputable enough and will also fit them for $45 a side for anyone in Brisbane.
I'm getting him to fit slightly longer inner boots aswell ( car is a spring/strut lifted Gen II Lib) so hopefully the driveshaft angle won't be so hard on them. Lifting is what really pi$$ed mine off, passenger side inner boot lasted all of two weeks and the drivers side when from having a little click went off camber to a constant one.
Will report on how they go.

i got 4 1/2 years out of the last one of theirs that developed a tick, would have got another year out of it easy if i wasn't heading out west and getting hte car 100%..
they are $180 fitted at the moment.
I would be very wary of $45 driveshafts... if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

4 1/2 years is awesome, especially in a lifted offroader. I'd give them a go but the budget it's already stretched, it's the last thing I have to do to get it on the road and hanging to drive it after weeks of having it in bits and waiting for everything.vincentvega wrote:JC:

My first ones were about 200 bucks trade six years ago, now down to about $120 each, so $20 per year per shaft if I can manage ain't too bad is it ?
I really do prefer to fit them myself - do not trust any other labour. I do have a pair of original Brumby CV and plan to leave them with a CV rebuilder to machine out for future spares.
The rears are DOJ both endsi

I'd steer clear of these from ebay, they may be good units but I'd prefer to be face to face with the guy selling these to me - that way he'd have to be a distance close enough to send it back and tell them what happened.

Don't hate me guys , Ellies front shafts were second hand from a wrecker turbo Vortex and 30 a side .
You generally get what you pay for with CV joints , the priority should be on quality joints AND boots . Personally I don't like remanufactured joints because to remove any material from the outer shell means they've gone through the hardening and into softer material .
It's CRITICAL with boots to get a suitable grade rubber or they won't last , it's as simple as that . Some people don't like to pay the extra but if you have to replace the joint or boot prematurely what have you saved - particularly if you forked out for a mechanic to do the work .
I'd be shoving the paper work up Mr Rip Every Poor Clown Off's nose . No Pro Rata on replacement warranty , ask him what the difference is between the first and last 2 months of the warranty period . Legally there is zip difference .
IMO the value in Repco is they are open 363 days of the year and there's usually one lurking nearby , better a more expensive part than nothing (on a Sunday) when cars act up ... Shop around for spares , the difference can be amazing .
I think it's better to deal with a driveline specialist if genuine or at least Japanese replacements parts cannot be found .

The guy's at the local CV joint place I use here are of the opinion that reconditioned (oversized ball barings) genuine Subaru joints are still far superior to the brand new chinese brand ones. I trust what they say because 1 - all they do are CV's, and 2 - I've had zero failures from their joints, and I've bought the reconned genuine ones a few times.
btw I am very rough on my CV joints....in the 3" lifted L with EJ20turbo motor, and it's been flogged very hard offroad.

guys,
as dane side Driveline Services in brisbane are the way to go if you are around the area, i got brand new ones for both the RX and the Lib, didnt have any probs on the RX, and only just split a boot on the lib while on the big trip (2years old at a guess).
also they freighted them up to me in Maryborough Qld for around $15 i think and i paid $140 for a new sharft, thats brand new inner and outer no reco.
The guy at six star motors here in maryborough has put a few repco ones in a brumby up here and the boots lasted 20000km on a road use only car.
Subaman on here bought ebay sharts and he said the clicked from the moment he put them in a few months ago so he took them out straight away.
so as disco said you get what you pay for really.....

Glad to know I'm not the only one with problems.
I thought I had a serious problem with the brumby.
Had both CV's replaced by local mechanic (no time and mechanically challenged).
Then managed a round trip from home to Adelaide (180klms) and discovered the drivers side boot had split.
Mechanic replaced for nothing and used a different brand, so 200klms and still looking good.

In Toowoomba, Petron West Automotive at Wylie street. The guy there works on his own and I have seen him assemble the CV joints. Specialises in CV joints mostly. Looks after me, cleans all the engine bay from the busted CV boot. Cleans the windows of the car as a service and doesn't charge excessively for fitting. Not worth my while to do it myself although I have done in the past. Usually ring him up, he fits me in and I go for a walk around the shops while he does it. When you find someone who looks after you and your car and you are happy with the work...stick with him.
I am dealing with him face to Bennie (see previous posts) - works out of East Brisbane. Will report back on how I go. Definitely not the sort of thing I normally buy from ebay but can understand the stigma. As far as I know they are reconditioned Subaru CV's.
Bit of an update on the "dodgy" Ebay driveshafts... 
Marco who is the "East Brisbane" based seller (can't speak for the other sellers) actually works out of ASNU Transmission products in East Brisbane. They supply (and have done for years) many high performance street and drag cars with torque converters and other driveline components, with the Street Machine magazine features on the wall to prove it.
I was quoted over the phone initially and the whole process was done outside of ebay. Service was excellent - straight to the point. I arrived at the time we'd arranged, the workshop and office were both very clean and organised. Marco was both friendly and professional, actually enjoys working on Subaru's as he appreciates the engineering Went out and looked at the car with me, offered to show me the driveshafts (could have got Chinese, Reconditioned Subaru or my own CV's reconditioned - all for the same price). I ended up going with reconditioned Subaru shafts. Told me he'd be 30mins so I went for a walk - car was ready right on 30mins. I didn't even have time to buy my lunch.
Hope this at least dispels some of the "Ebay" stigma.
...Now to see how long they last.
