New 3.0R spec B Liberty Ping

Hi,
My name's Rob and this is my first post to this forum. I am the owner of a new MY08 3.0R Spec B sedan that now has about 10,000k on the clock. I love the car and the way it handles. However, for the last 5000k or so I have noticed a slight ping at around 3-4000 revs under load. It is more noticeable in Sports # mode. I've been back to Subaru a few times and they have compression tested it and checked timing etc and report that everything is ok. They have heard the ping themselves and advised that a slight ping is ok. I find that hard to believe for a new car. I only use 98fuel. I have been going back to the workshop attached to the dealership that I bought the car from, but have been frustrated with the lack of feedback on the issue. I'm going to change workshops for the 12,500 service to get a second opinion.
My questions are:
1. Is ping normal in a new 3.0R spec B Liberty?
2. Likely causes?
3. Would one of the custom tunings like ECUTek potentially fix the ping
Any advice would help.
Regards
Rob

1. Not normal for any car
2. Not enough fuel given for the air. Basically an incorrect air fuel ratio.
3. Yes, but why pay for something that should be fixed by the manufacturer.

Definitely go to another dealer, whinge more, talk to managers, and even ring Subaru customer service. I would assume the phone number for them will be in your documents you get when you purchase the vehicle.

I would speak to Darren at Boxer services at Brendale. At least you will get some sense form him.

You are right though, a new car should not do that.

which 98 fuel are you using? My old man has the same car, and runs only bp ultimate 98 with no probems.

For some reason(dont ask me why) i dont trust the caltex and shell 98 octanes.

Thanks for the comments. I've used a range of 98 fuels but actually found Caltex Vortex 98 to be the best. The subaru mechanic actually suggested using the Shell V Power Racing (100 octane) to fix the problem. Apart from the fact this is now discontinued, I think it is only treating the symptom and not the cause.

Regard

Rob.
