Back to a Subi
Hi All,
Just joined your great site.
After owning a 86 L series for a couple of years as my first car I am back in the position (car free) to get another subi.
Question, in WA there seems to be a few more 91-94 Liberty wagons around, than the L series.
Can I acheive the same off road performance with a liberty? I was planning on putting a 2-3 inch lift and some nice 14'' rims with decent tyres. Mainly beach and light off road. Not worried about on road, wife has a lovely Impreza!
I know this might be an open question but any help would be appreciated.

The Liberty makes a good off roader, mine only has a 2" lift and outback sturts and King springs and some bigger tyres, and if all your going to do is up the beach and light off road this setup should be all you need.
Mine has gone every were I have pointed it, but I have not tried anything to hard to get up as it is my only car and can't afford to have it off the road to fix what I mite brake in trying somthing to hard.
I went up the beach with just the lift kit in and it was very hard going as it was draging it's belly the hole way, but since I have put the struts and bigger tyres on it's been good even towing a camper trailer up the beach has not stoped us (yet).

G'day and welcome,
Oh yeah liberty are a good off roader, but one thing about the dual range gearbox is that it lucks low range gearing as its not 'low' enough for as low range (if you had low range in your l series and jump in liberty you'll notice big difference!)( - see my signature thread)
Yep as what riksta said above is correct about the lift & outback/raised springs and will give you a good clearance.
Good Luck!
Cheers

Foresters need mods too.Albert wrote:Why not get a Forrester then you don't have to do any mods.

For light offroad work, a Lib would be fine, and more comfortable. Basically comes down to the condition and features of the individual cars you're looking at.
Dane.
Thats what I thought would be said, however there is way more to offroading than scraping a bumper here and there, the gearing in a liberty can be improved well beyond anything that was available in an L Series, also you have the option of an automatic, the Liberty`s , foresters etc have far better suspension than an L Series and more aftermarket options available too, The Liberty etc are better tow vehicles, have more room ,and way more comfortable interior, more wheel and tyre choices, better brakes, better cooling system, safety features, the list goes on, The way Bretts Liberty was set up with the 2.5 Turbo automatic, 29 inch tyres etc was pretty well unstopable and would show up pretty much any L Series offroad, so I personally dont think saying the L series is "more capable" is the correct choice of words. Hvin owned My`s, 2 Rx Turbo`s, an auto L touring wagon, and 2 Libertys - one turbo, one NA, I honestly belive the Liberty is probably the best all rounder from them all and thats on and off the road.Overhangs and gearing.
