Why so stinky

Post by logonberry » Fri Aug 28, 2009 10:31 pm

When I travel in my Subaru Brumby I get sick from the smell of fuel rich exhaust fumes even with the window closed. Has any Brumby owners on this forum had this problem.

Make sure that the rubber boot that supports the steering column in the firewall is in good condition. Make sure the exhaust connection between the front y pipes and rear section isnt leaking. It is a flexible joint and over time rust, carbon ect build up causing it to leak (Thats if you have one) Make sure any other rubber grommets and boots in the fire wall are there and in good condition. Check that your door rubbers are in good condition, check the rubber boot that sits over the gear lever/duel range lever is not torn and secured well.

does it happen while you're driving or stationary?
I remembered that i had a panel van and the fumes used to come thru the floor shifter as the rubber cracked. Worth checking there? I would be looking at all seals, and get the engine checked out for over powering fuel smell.
Cheers

somehow air manages to sneak into my cabin when the outside air is way colder than inside, it is like a draught from don't know where. If you get same and it picks up fumes...dunno.

Is it exhaust gas that is getting you or smell of petrol coz exhaust fumes would suggest you have an exhaust leak from hole or joints. Holes/cracks needdifferent attention to jonts. Joints can be resealed with gasket and silicone. Holes cracks weld or replace. There is also the tailpipe, if it too short fumes trap under car and up into your lungs. Is your fuel cannister black thing under bonnet working hooked up to catch fumes from tank correctly?
