pretty sure its handbrake light, there's an oil pressure light (looks like an oil can) for oil and the 'check engine' light will come up with there is anything wrong elsewhere... is the ! surround by brackets, ie (!)? Could just be a loose connection or a dodgy senson... check the manual that's available from here as to where the handbrake sensor is and how to check it.

That'll be what it is. Australia is the only country that requires vehicles to have a hand brake light - hence why the (!) symbol lights up on new models, instead of putting another light on the dash to say the hand brake is on, car manufactures use the brake warning light instead. My GF's VT has it...

It should be right if you top up the brake fluid.

low brake fluid

Post by bendigojet » Tue Sep 08, 2009 11:05 am

thank you to all who replied with constructive answers i can confirm that the (!) light on the dash does in fact indicate low brake fluid on my car (it was on 3/4 full but topping it up fixed the light on problem ,)
so (!) is low brakefluid
P is park brake

many thanks

Now the question is - why is it low on brake fluid? may indicate a leak somewhere, as brake fluid should not generally go down.

That I what I said to myself this morning... I would investigate this area to be safe - why it dropped the level? Is there something wrong in the system and would get it checked out. I would be concerned if there was some air in the lines.. or dirt?
