have considered a power one in the past, but price would be a large factor and the fact i got issued a defect and just want to get the car on the road as quick as i can.
just got a $200 fine bout 20 mins ago for driving from a wreckers pricing parts. i was under the impression you could do that with a canary but i guess not. not happy.

Is the rack or the rack ends? The rack ends are cheap to buy new?

You will need a brumby or MY rack. I recently changed a manual rack for power steering in an L series and I would have to say that the positive change int he way the car drives would mean that I persoanlly would ensure that I upgraded to power steer. I managed to get the complete system for the L for about 100 bucks and it took only a couple of hours to change. I would think it would be similar for a brumby.
i had a mechanic have a quick look and he said i needed to replace a tie rod end and will probably need to replace the steering rack as well. had a talk to a subaru dealer an he said most likely not a tie rod end but the next section up that has a bush in it so will have to wait till i get the road worthy report to know exactly what needs replacing.

G'day Preno,
If your car is defected to need a RWC, you can't drive it unless its to or from a place that has worked on it/done the RWC. If its a minor defect there will be conditions that you can use the vehicle in or not in - like my gf's VT with bald rear tyres, still allowed to drive it, just not in wet weather...
As for the rack, from what I've seen I would steer clear of the L's rack as it won't fit without stuffing around. If you were considering an L's rack, you'd be better off fitting powersteering from an MY touring wagon. You'd be surprised what the PSing does to transform the feel of your subi...
ANY rack from an MY series subi will fit your brumby, just depends on how much you're willing to pay - the difference of the PS setup to the non PS rack is what I'm talking about here.
All the best with it!
Cheers

I just picked up a MY power steering rack from the wreckers up here in Darwin for $95. I was planning on putting a seal kit through it before putting it into the brumby but upon refering to my trusty gregory's manual it tells me that I need special tools to pull them apart and it should be done by a specialist. Has anyone else pulled one of these apart and if so do I need anything special to do it? I can't imagine that there would be anything too complicated in there.
Hey guys been a while since i jumped on the forum but the brumby is back on the road!
I ended up just replacing the rack ends an a tie rod end. Did help a bit but there is still a bit of slop in the steering which i think is a bush in the left hand side of the steering rack. Also the pinion(? i think? the piece that turns which moves the rack left an right) moves slightly up an down which wouldnt help with the slop. not sure what to do there.
Also found out the hard way that the brand roadsafe make the rackends incorrectly. the inner thread of the rackend is not ment to go all the way to the end (if that makes sense) but they do with roadsafe. luckily pedders had some, exact same part number. just pissed had to pay an extra $40 for them!
anyway am just happy the ute is back on road.
