The month/year of manufacture is on the under side of the oil cap.
Although of course there is no garantee the oil cap hasn't been swapped from some other motor.

early rex motors had the crooked tmi and the intake to head bolts were in a line from about 1996-98, plastic header tank, somewhere about 96 had the td05 turbo. later wrx had the tmi straight and intake to head bolts were staggered, ally header tank, these were used from about 98 till 02 (certainly bug eyes not sure about blob/drop eyes). any newer than that and subaru went variable cam timing, identifiable by big lumps in front plastics over the intake cam pulleys. i think there wasnt much else done until we got 2.5 wrxs.
this info is only from the top of my head and should be used only as a guide, plenty of others here will have actual years and more changes

Hehehe... I had a look at mine - it said 9/1 so I'm guessing that means '91 which is what I pulled the motor from. Did the Gen 2's come in at 1991?

yeah that'd be a 91 oil cap bennie. there should be another slightly smaller number to indicate the month :)
