They are bloody beautiful to drive on the beach.
I have never had any clearance issues.
The dual range 4WD box helps too, if you ever start getting bogged down just stick it in low range and keep going

Mate im sure you could find plenty.
Gumtree would be my first stop as they seem to have plenty of L Series. You might be lucky and get one that has a EJ22 conversion.
Either way mate there definitely out there.

Do not spend $4K on a L-Series.
Good EFI models are worth $1.5K to $2K max
Think about a Liberty (will do the same if not better off road) unless you are keen on L for whatever reason.

You could buy a decent Brumby for $4,000.
Or a liberty.
What I think you should do is buy an L series ( 1.5 - 2k max)
And then spend the rest on doing it up. Engine mods, lift kit, etc.

Think you need to work what you want first. EA82MPFI? Converted L?
EJ L Series ~$3K like
this
L Series build (car, lift, wheels, engine, clutch, exhaust) will be well north of $4K
That is why the Liberty ~$2K is such value for money - or for another $500 on top of your budget a Foz with more modern cons as mentioned.

They're alright for what they are - you have to find one that's been looked after or do some work such as rebuilding the carbie etc.
As for your question about the MPFI - look for the touring wagons - they're the ones that came out with the MPFI EA82.
Really what you're probably better off doing is buying an L series for cheap - then doing an EJ conversion on it by buying a cheap liberty with a good running engine - auto libs usually go for peanuts with gearbox problems or for the simple fact that not many buy the older autos. Then take your time and do the conversion yourself.
If that's not for you just buy a liberty. If you're wanting to do it up for the sand a great combination in my book is a two inch lift kit - full body, not just strut but you can get away with just strut but you'll lose out on some suspension droop - foz box (4.11 diff, 1.477:1 low range [2L models]) and stock foz size tyres. Plenty of lift, stock gearing and plenty of EJ power.
My 5 cents
Cheers
