EJ22 N/A Turbo
EJ22 N/A Turbo
Hey guys... ive been reading a post... http://www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/show ... 559&page=2
And its about turboing the stock EJ22 n/a motor. Just curious on whether this is possible or not.
By the sounds of what they have done it is... but i mean what is needed besides a healthy ej22 motor :P
I would be only running LOW psi and everything but trying to figure out what exactly i need to do this conversion
Any help would be appreciated
cheers
Bob

There are 3 sides to the modification triangle.
Powerful, Reliable and Cheap
Choose 2.
It could work for a while, it could last for years, but there is a reason that there is a difference between turbo and non turbo engines.
I was considering it, but i wouldnt do it to my daily driver, id only do it in my weekend car.

True true.. thats what im hmmming and ahhhhing about.. whether it will last
My other thing is.. my car is FWD atm.. would i need to convert to AWD or would the box hold for now?
I found a you tube vid of a guy that did one...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1UybkYZOI0

Motor sounds pretty good
Like the backing music
but...can't see why one would bother with a NA FWD when gen AUDM and JDM RS's go for around $3-5k with all the goods, or GX/LX conversion can had be for less.
Both with A LOT less stuffing around
But hey, if you do it, be sure to document the project here

Altho really, a conversion to a turbo motor fulfills all three of these It can be done cheaply if you can source a well priced frontcut, and it's very straight forward in most cases.Suparoo wrote:There are 3 sides to the modification triangle.

I was mostly referring to trying to be cheap by turboing a NA motor as opposed to forking out to buy a turbo motor

There is nothing wrong with the ej22 block, many guys use it for engine builds. Its the high compression pistons that will eventually cause you grief, especially if you try to use the na ecu

There was a long thread about doing up (turbo/boost etc) EJ22/EJ235/EJ25 on RSLC forum.

Forced induction (blown or turbo) on a EJ22 high compression is possible, ask Subarino. It would all depend on the amount force you are trying to push into the manifold? On standard compression you could comfortably use 6psi boost and running 98RON fuel. If you're looking to push more than that you'll need to lower the compression ratio. I found using a set of Cometic Head Gaskets from the USA EJ22 SOHC Turbo model works quiet well. With this config and a intercooler (size does matter) will allow you to increase boost to around 10-12psi. If you want more boost than this, I can help you with a set of factory EJ22 Turbo pistons.

If 6psi is all you're ever going to push through the manifold then the standard pistons will handle it with 98RON fuel. If you look to use lower RON fuels then you may want to look at putting STi injectors in the manifold. I would recommend you do this anyway as you can then run a piggyback EMS to adjust fuel and timing. As for the pistons, I'll send you a PM

Care to elaborate?? Its all good to make a statement like this but its even better if you've got some experience to share about it... and I'm keen to hear it as I reckon a 6psi turbo'd EJ22 would be pretty sweet, so long as you don't flog it every day of its turbo life.Abaddon wrote:don't do it.

666 yeeaahh...doooo eet 666
You will most likely have to pussy foot it around at take off with just FWD
twilight essentially did same with EA82 mpfi block with turbo or turbo mod heads. Have the advantage of being able to set timing at 10 instead of 20 BTDC to cater for increased compression over normal
