Anyone imported a car for parts?

Post by sammynb » Tue May 17, 2011 4:04 pm

I've been watching an XT6 on one of the US salvage auction sites and it looks like it's going to go for a couple of hundred dollars at most.
So 5 stud hubs, an ER27 flat six with AWD auto box, the front end is bent but everything else looks spot on, so it would be perfect to gut.
But after doing some research because it's a complete vehicle, it comes under the classification of importing a motor vehicle, which from the customs website looks a hassle (http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4371.asp).

Has anyone ever gone through the process? Is it worth the trouble? As it's an '88 XT6 it could be eligible under the pre '89 clause but nothing's guaranteed.

Hw much was your import Giles
Front cut aus to uk ?

Would have to be way less paperwork than a "whole" car if you could convince seller to send as a cut ie parts on a pallet

Shivers !!! Nasty looking website that is :-(

If your road vehicle has a value below the import entry threshold (AUD1000) it may be cleared by Customs by lodging a self-assessed clearance (SAC) declaration.* A VIA is required regardless of the value of the road vehicle.

^^ that may help tho ?

Traumatized after clicking that link :???:

Shipping and duty and handling each end. The UK vat also payable was able to be reclaimed.
No great hassle - so certainly '' Used car parts'' is the way cheaper option.

Seen to think total up for me was £900 ish ?? Cant exactly remember !

"Can't exactly remember !"

That is lazy on my part since I learned to do quote boxes :(

That's in case Mrs Giles is cruising this site :-)

I can just see Tsubaru searching for this bargain as it is somewhere in his territory.
Sammy, think I saw an ad in justcars at your local newsagent for about $5, for US imports and the cost just to transport whole car is about 3250$ to Oz.

Thanks steptoe but the company that is auctioning the car also arranges shipping, $1500US to Australia, hence why I'm considering it.
