WILL THIS PASS W.A. Pit inspection for rego?

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Sun Jul 17, 2011 11:15 pm

I have a 93 L Series with a hole in the passenger-side front quarter panel.
All this panel does is join up to make a wheel well.

A mechanic I met said "...No worries, it's just superficial; doesn't affect integrity or safety..."

and then I have people at SuperCheap Auto saying it will fail for sure
and recommended I fix it with body filler.

I have a rego inspection TOMORROW at 1pm.
PLEASE RESPOND ASAP, if you know anything about WA inspections.

I already cancelled one inspection last week
because this same mechanic who looked at my quarter-panel
said that my tires stick out too far (thanks to aftermarket rims)
and I'd need fender flares. :(

I just installed the flares after many hours of mucking around with crappy self-tapping screws.
My flares look great... too bad it didn't already come with them.

I will cancel tomorrow's appointment to save the $90 inspection fee,
if a disintegrating bottom front quarter panel will fail.

Thanks

Best of the bunch of cars 1-3?

I actually mistakenly looked close at the front, the driverside and passenger side, (at night with a good LED torch) but failed to notice damage on the passenger side. I figured it's just cosmetic; has no real function that quarterpanel. Besides it's already registered so it can't be that bad... or so I thought. :???: I'll be livid if this fails pit inspection because of part of this corner is missing.

Again, thanks.

Pits fail a lot of things,

we just passed my bro's brumby had to go over twice.

All rubber boots etc in the drive train must not be ripped. Basically everything that is on the car must work properly. Post a pic of your hole.

I could have a look at the car if your around Thornlie.

I would need an SA address, and when I signed the transfer papers I already put a WA address on the form, before contacting SA Transport Department about actually doing the transfer. There are two parts, one for the seller, one for the buyer and I figure he's already submitted his portion, so they know where I live already. :???:

I just had a CV boot repaired.
Just to be safe, I fixed a stone chip with a DIY repair kit.
Everything else looks fine...

except for some tubing for emissions equipment is missing
and the tube connecting to the air cleaner for warmer air when it's below 15 C is also missing.

So many people here say it just has to be road-worthy.
Nothing about my car is unsafe, that I'm aware of...

probably not. whenn I put my l series over the pits they knocked it back because the preheater pipe thingy was missing, I dug up a piece of corrugated pipe from somewhre and put it on, passed, by the time I got home it had melted off.
go around and check all the lights, stop, turn, park, etc. Has it been rejected ? if they have given you a list they cannot change it for future inspections, just fix that and you are right.
as far as the missing panel is concerned if it is not structural they could pass it but they probably wont, they like things to look original. I have an l series I am cutting up if you want I can cut out the panel and send to you, cost of postage and cutting disc only.
also make sure the immobiliser is working they are picky on that.
if they notice the emmissions hoses are missing they will nitpick on that, try to run the lines where they can't be seen.

this vBulletin site is old-school.
It doesn't seem to allow posting pictures directly from your computer.
I don't have time to load them onto photobucket.

I'll see if I can connect the pre-heater.
Dunno why it was removed. I'd like having it there if it worked...
It's supposed to help below 15 C.

If the hole is small and you can get behind it, glue a piece of something in there or pop rivet it in place then bog over, sand it back smooth then spray it over with a colour that's as close to what you have on the car - or get one of those cans made up that is the same colour as your current paint, but that can be $$s and take a week to arrive to you...

It shouldn't be hard to cover the hole to get it past. The emissions stuff I would make sure you've got it all installed as it should be, otherwise you'll get knocked back for sure!

Cheers

It's big imho (can slide my hand in) but a mechanic reckoned it'd be fine... :???:

My car didn't come with all the emissions piping, it's not like I chose to remove it.
I'm missing the pre-heater pipe (wtf!) and the pipe that is beside it
that points rearward and terminates beside the bottom of the firewall.

Honestly,
my car is in better shape than 80-90% of the registered vehicles on the road of its age or older.
I've seen registered cars with windscreen cracks that go top to bottom.

Yeah it's pretty lax at WA most of the time, but it depends completely on the guy and what side of the bed he got out of that morning. If the car is in generally good shape (brakes work well, steering doesn't shake, lights all work, horn works etc) then you have a good chance. If it doesn't pass they'll tell you why and just fix that and come back.

Make sure there's no rips or tears in the seats, if they do then get seat covers. Seatbelts can't be frayed, and they need to retract without getting stuck. If they're slow to retract then you can clean the bits of plastic the belt wraps around because they get a build up of oily/skin muck that the belt sticks to.

You get like two weeks to address everything on the RWC so don't worry about it not passing first go. In Vic i've never heard of a car passing straight off, they always pick something.

If the seat belts have a fluffy edge on them get a cigarette lighter & run it up & down them, melts the nylon back to how it should look, I've done it to nearly every car I've put over because if they fail a belt you must replace it with a new one as second hand may have been in an accident. Go buy a $5 rivet gun and pop a bit of tin over the hole in the guard....make it look like you've made an effort and be careful of that Guyph....he just wants to see your hole lol.

I've used the ol' "lighter melt of the seat belt fuzz" before. I have also been told that you can't use second hand seat belts before too, but have done exactly that without am eyebrow being raised.

As far as the warm air intake hose is concerned, my L passed a few times with it missing no worries. Probably comes down to if the rego guy knows enough about Subis to know it is missing. Pretty sure you can get a bit of generic foil hose pretty cheap if you have to.

the paint people can do a perfect match while you wait, takes 20 minutes. had it done a while ago was $35 for 600ml pressure pack.
as for heater pipe don't know where you are going to find temp below 15deg although I guess pemberton etc can get cold.
big fines if you get caught with emmission control lines disconnected.
had a look at my wreck, I would suggest the hole in your floor would allow fumes to enter as it is a single skin section, so it's for your own safety.

Good news

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Mon Jul 18, 2011 9:14 pm

Passes. :)

Emissions equipment is not a concern in WA.
My mechanic was right, don't worry about the rotted corner of the fender.
I'll return the body filler tomorrow.
I might be inclined to pop-rivet a patch piece in, if I don't find a full fender.
(on second thought, that'd mean redoing all the screws on my fender flare :p)

So this is colour-matched touch up paint?

How about EVERY morning, when it isn't summer?
I think the warmest morning I've seen since June was 12 C, so far.
Ideally I'd like to spend many weekends at various SW beaches,
leaving early in the morning to make the most of short winter daylight hours.

Compared to fuel injected cars that act insensitive to temperature,
it smells and sounds (struggles a bit to idle) like it doesn't like weather where I need a jumper. :p

I think I have some of the emissions equipment intact.
I do not smell any fuel vapour, anytime. (charcoal canister working?)
I suspect my catyltic converters are also working as the exhaust smells like
"modern car" not "lawn mower"

Nah, the hole is not in the car, but in the quarter panel.
It does not connect to the cabin.

thanks for the responses guys :)
