What's the best type/brand of gearbox oil to use for the standard 4 speed Brumby box?

I've noticed it's getting a bit thin.... ( it's probably never been changed)

there are many brands and it depends on how much you want to spend.

I have fuchs mp80 titan gear oil in my brumby box (admittedly it is a 5 speed liberty single range) and it works well.

Jetcar has repco brand gear oil in it for now, when I have time I will change it to the same oil as my brumby.

What is the Fuchs worth, if you don't mind me asking? And how much do I need?

Sorry I've got no idea I was given 8 litres by a mate of mine when he moved house.

I did a search and the only price I could find was in English pounds £28.78 for 4 litres. which according to the currency chocolate wheel is $44.50 AU.

According to the gregorys manual you need 3.3 litres, I normally put in 3.5 litres.

i like penrite oils and use nothing else.

I've been using an LSD gear oil in my gearbox as it's better in hotter conditions - if you're planning to be doing some tough 4wd'n that will heat the gearbox it could be a good idea.

I found mine shifted better after the gear change.

Ooh ooh! Do tell ? What is it? Brand etc etc that's what I need ha ha!

Nulon smooth shift 75w - 90 for gearbox and differential combo's 4lts $44.95 at supercheap

run it in the liteace 8 seater along with Nulon street and track 15w - 50 5lt $56.95

have a look at the Nulon oils

+1 to the nulon oil, have run it in my beamers that got a very hard treatment as well as the brumby before the rebuild. Their transmission oils are great (particularly the full synthetic lsd oils). I would recommend adding their gearbox additive at the same time. From memory it is nulon g something (in a white tube). It has P.T.F.E in it ..which I am pretty sure is basically a teflon coating. Found especially in my rough 4 speed it made a big difference.

As far as nulons engine oils, they are quite well priced but I tend to be a penrite man through and through

Oh and this not changing the gearbox oil seems to be common amongst old subi owners...When I picked up the brumby we drove it from glen innes up to Brisbane. Upon arrival starting checking over it (because it drove horribly) and one of the many things we found was the fact that when we checked the gearbox for oil it was hard to even get a drop on the dipstick but there was plenty of dust and gunk. I don't know many gearboxes out of any car that would even last 10ks in the condition this was in.

I've had a mate that "did his own oil change" from the advice of another mate. Well he went too far back and drained the gearbox then topped up the engine oil not thinking of the little amount that went into the engine...

~350km the L series stopped. Seized gearbox! And an expensive repair
