Get a hacksaw and cut the bracket on the strut. Bend it away. Much easier than redoing your brake fluid system. Then when you reinstall cut the bracket on the new strut and just bend the tab back to secure the brake line again.

The strut is definitely bent in those pics. The rest should be okay

That's mine when I bent it. You can see what I mean by cutting that brake line bracket.

Second thoughts. Your radius rod and control arms should be checked. I think the radius rod will be bent if the wheel is sitting further back in the guard. The evidence of this your stuffed fender.

Update

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Sat Feb 11, 2012 8:49 pm

A neighbour helped me out with installing some parts today.

Today:

- removed bent & rusted fender, this was a bit tricky with my roobar still in place

- removed bent strut

- installed nearly-new Monroe strut with thicker aftermarket coil springs (from Guyph01 :))

- installed a new lower ball joint... probably not damaged in the collision, but the rubber was torn at one side so worth replacing

Tomorrow I hope to install the other heavy-duty strut/spring, paint the fender guyph sold me and maybe install the new fender. :)

what's my paint colour?

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Sun Feb 12, 2012 7:50 am

I saw a sticker under the bonnet that says "Paint Colour #9"

My 93 L Series has a dark red glossy paint.
I'm thinking of getting matching paint to touch up the rust.

Another option is "deep indian red" or "dark cherry red" from Killrust.
It's an enamel paint, so that might mean it'd need to be removed if in the future I want matching paint. :???:
It'd be so easy to just go get the $14 can of dark red killrust and call it a day.

At the moment,
I don't want to leave my L Series sitting on safety stands, not being able to drive it.
I would have ordered a custom colour yesterday,
but I didn't know which colour or have a paint sample to give "Anchor Paints"
They told me it will cost $105 to make up 1 L of custom colour,
but they can put it in anything I want, including aerosol can.

Autobarn make up custom paint. To your special colour number.
I think it is about $30 per can.
How much are you Painting?

Autobahn? I thought that's how it's spelled. :???:

The outside of the new fender, plus some random spots I'd like to touch up the rust on.

Wow! My car feels better than before

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Mon Feb 13, 2012 7:57 am

My strut set I got off Guyph01 had Monroe struts and King Springs.
I cannot believe how much better my car feels... I wonder if some of it is the new ball joint.
I was suspicious that I'd enjoy new shocks, however others suggested I don't need them.
When I push down on my roobar, the front goes back up firmly and doesn't shake,
while the back end giggles for another 5 seconds or so.
I reckon I'll want to replace the rear shocks and maybe springs too somewhere in the near future.

I sanded and painted the inside of the fender with this black spray undercoat stuff because most of it won't be seen anyway.

Happy your pleased with the Parts KPM supplied. I have the matching set of rear shocks but give me a few months time to work on a setup for the rear on mine as one of them is being used on my car at the moment.

So was it only the shock that was bent? I don't think the ball joint would do anything more than just hold the hub in.
Well your shocks are about 20years old now, compared to (assuming 2-5year old shocks), well i don't have to tell you, you found out already:)

Ohhhhh, sry to ask this but if your finished and if you have the time, Could you drop off the spring compressors back as i'm getting my new shocks the end of week and would need them.

Thx

Who is KPM btw? :)

Yes only the shock was bent. I just happened to notice the rubber boot for the ball joint was torn, I couldn't tell if it was damaged in the collision and seemed worth replacing anyway(s). (I just found out saying "anyways" is American sounding :p)

I want to drop off the spring compressors today, if you're available. :)

Steering is tracking straighter, yet the steering wheel is crooked

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Mon Feb 13, 2012 10:50 pm

My car tracks straighter than ever before, with the driver side tyre angled slightly inwards at the bottom (up-down direction, not forward-and-back) and when I let the steering wheel go, it drives quite straight yet the steering wheel is turned up about 5 cm higher clockwise from where it should be.

How did this happen?
How can this be fixed?

I don't want to pay for an alignment to put my wheel back where it was, then have the same amount of steering pull I used to have.

Thoughts?

The bumpstops inside my original strut boots are disintegrating.

Do I need new ones to go with my King Springs and Monroe struts?
They didn't come with any... :???:

I did a fair bit of severe bottoming and topping back in Shark Bay.
I suspected the suspension could have been better prepared.

You need a wheel alignment after such a blow to the front end. Any decent wheel aligner will fix your steering wheel offset and set up your front end to factory specs.

No debate required.

Or you could save $35 and scrub out $300 worth of tyres...
