I've tried several and I miss the one I had in Canada.
I still have it, but the cost of Australian map updates are so expensive I might as well by a new GPS.

I have a TomTom and a basic Garmin...
both of which you cannot ask the GPS where you are, save the location and give it your own name.
The Garmin I had in Canada was a bit "higher-end" and had this feature.
I don't understand why every GPS doesn't have this.

If there's something better than Garmin, I'd like to hear before my next purchase.

Some GPS devices make it easy to track your own route, even entirely offroad.
My best GPS could only save single destination points, not track and remember the routes taken.

Thoughts?

my android phone is the best gps ive had. 'my tracks' is a really good track mapping app.

i got 2 units.

a navman my75t which has been software cracked, and runs ozi explorer for offroad stuff. quite a good onroad gps with some 4x4 hema maps too.

also run tablet, with mudmap, hema navigation, and motionx gps, MUCH more expensive option but is by far the best and most accurate, best maps, with the most useability

if you want it for 4x4 maps have a look at the Hema and VMS units not cheap but have good map systems and can load music and videos on them for play back as well

and garmin offer the best after market manufacturer map update deals...
you can get Garmins maps, or OZtopo,
similar prices
its water proof
long 8 hour battery life, (considering its mainly an in-car unit,,,thats a long life)
and you can instantly find your current GPS position (hit one button)
you can change between on and off road navigation,
even without upgrading to topo maps
HEMA and VMS are only better for the slightly bigger screen, but the garmin is much easier to use, on the move as you only use your finger on the touch screen, doesnt need the little stylis pen to filter through the menu with small fonts (like the hema has)

the nuvi 500 is the only main model that is multimode, most of the other garmin nuvi's are car based only and wont have multi mode options or a long battery life either...

vms and hema are actually a LOT more detailed with offroad maps. they use full topo and raster maps, not just a little bit bigger screen.

but dont get the vms they are still full of bugs, the hema would be the way to go. but expensive for somebody that will use mostly on the road....
