What to do with a 5MT with a binding viscous coupling

So recently my Center Diff started to bind up pretty bad and in order to not have the car off the road too long i decided to just drop a newer(lower Km) gearbox straight in. So thanks to my Gf's dad buying a 4 post hoist, this job was pretty easy

So i now have a box stairing at me with near good internals and im tossing up weather to open it up and learn a bit about how they work. or just sell it as it is? another option might be to wait to try and find a smashed gearbox from an rs or rex and swap the Diff out to mine? anyone know which models would fit etc?

cheers

Bust it open and take a look!

Really, to check out the damaged bit you only need to remove the back of the gearbox, the centre diff is located here and you will most likely see some blue colouring on the diff and it'll feel all kinds of wrong from memory.

There's a thread over here that's talking about the same problem. I'm 99% sure that the rear casings are interchangeable between all EJ AWD 5pd gearboxes ;) But someone will let you know otherwise ;)

It would be good for somebody into serious offroading, an almost locked centre in an EJ box

I think the 4 bolt <MY 99 and later 8 bolt boxes like yours have a different rear casing but it's a much easier and cheaper job than changing the entire box......hi/low, normal 5 speed & WRX interchangeable too.

Cheers guys. i think i will hang onto it and keep a look out for a box with a few blown gears. Its probably not worth much as it is.
I never thought of that Gannon! makes sense

My box didn't have that flat inspection plate on top of the rear section like in Jakes thread. Is this to do with the dual range? or is this an earlier rear casing?

Earlier rear casing - which means there are changes... I can't be anymore help without nutting it out myself.
