hi guys wondering if use could help me out, i have a rather large oil leak on the brumby i believe its coming from an area ill try explain were as im not that mechanical minded. its the next section of the engine past the valve cover sorry thats about the best i can do, there seems to be a leak there and when the engine is hot she flows a fair bit. any help would be awesome....

Your engine left to right.
Rocker cover, head, Block, head, rocker cover

Front to back.
Pulleys etc, block, bell housing, gearbox.

Hope this helps you to describe the region better.

cheers man it must be the head leaking or the only other thing it could be the oil pan. thing is i did rocker cover gaskets the other day and did oil change were it is leaking is real black dirty oil but dip stick is super clean.....

Between head and block?
If so head gasket failure most likely.
Check that you water and oil arnt mixing.
If it is rocker and head then that is just a rocker cover gasket.
And the sump is the sump.
The last two are easy jobs.

ill check things again in the morning just seems wierd to as ive just put a weber on as well

the crank case breathers can leak as well. Wash / degrease it all and start again - no one is gonna be able to remote diagnose real well. Tip is place cardboard sheet underneath and run on the spot to help ID where it drops from. You may have clean oil inside, as it leaks takes dirt with it off the outside

guys i think i have found the oil leak i believe its between the bell housing and the block, i cleaned under the ute were i thought it was leaking from, ran the ute at idle for over 15 mins not leak, took it for a quick spin got back and oil dripping right behind the oil pan. not engine oil but tranny oil very dirty can use guys help

Tranny oil? Coming from the area you describe I would have thought it was the rear main oil seal on the engine, but if you say tranny oil then maybe the front main seal on the g/box.

Alternatively, you may have the same problem I had which was the oil pump (at the front) is cracked and leaks like a seive, but the air flow from driving pushes the oil back and makes a puddle on the cross member, and drips from there making you think it's the rear main seal. When I had that though you could sit and watch the oil drip at idle it was that fast.

If it's the oil pump, expect to pay around $400 for a new one, good luck removing a used one without cracking it. If it's the rear main seal on engine or front seal on gearbox, it's an engine out job to replace. But these things are so simple you could have the engine out, fixed and replaced in an afternoon if you have the tools and know how.

cheers definatly tranny oil ive already done the oil pump seals about six months ago and its all good, i havent lost any engine oil but gearbox oil is down some. will it hurt if i just top up oil and drive for now until i can get to mechanic..

So long as you don't let it get too low you'll be right. But get there asap - dropping oil isn't good for anyone!

The front seal on the gearbox has worn out, it would probably be cheaper to find a good 5 speed L series box and tailshaft and drop that in, or a good 4 speed brumby box.

Cheaper? maybe, easier? definitely not. If the current g/box is still good and only the seal is gone it's easy to replace a seal, only "hard" part is the engine hoist and maybe aligning the clutch if you don't have the right tool (universal ones don't work)

Just for the unexperienced, Sam, the front seal on the manual 4 speed 4WD DR box of MY and Brumby, is sort of a case of to scratcch your bottom you need to go through from your mouth first. One guy in here broke his front bits trying to remove from the front.
Tranny oil is generally term for auto trans oil, red in colour....do you have that coming out or gearbox diff 80W90 with pungent pong that does not wash away off your hands easily ?
If you have auto fluid in manual box for shift reasons, maybe drain it and refill with manual box oil and some nulon G70 or follow instructions for their engine stop leak ESL for adding to gearbox manuals only

Difficult is not a word that comes to mind ! In order to practice demolish one of these boxes, I needed a jigsaw to enlarge a hole between cases to get a socket in to undo a big nut at the back. Little detent balls and springs falling out everywhere as I went. ALso met a guy Philip49 o ebay who actually enjoyed rebuilding these boxes ! he had manuals too

Definitely easier for a replacement box or go the L series 5 speed gearbox. As steptoe says below, it's a gearbox split to replace that little seal

The PT4wd 5spd L series gearbox isn't fun to split at the best of times, but the PT4wd 4spd box sounds like a whole different kettle of fish in the difficulty department!
