Chasing a 1980's subaru Leone stereo surround

Post by Chopper05 » Thu Aug 30, 2012 9:37 pm

Hey guys,

Does any have or know where i can get my hands on a grey early 80's center console/stereo surround? Am looking at putting it in a brumby so i can fit my stereo, and it will look a little more stock as apposed to makign up a bracket/spacer for it. Chased some wreckers in SE Melbourne and looked on ebay & gumtree with no luck.

Head Unit Options ...

I did something a bit more radical than what you'd normally do ... would something like this interest you ? :

( I might do a write up on it when I've finished it ;0 )

As for your problem, appart from the obvious solution ( wreckers ), keep looking on e-bay, etc. for them, something usually crops up. ... :)

At some stage Chopper may even accept a pink console - surely some grey vinyl spray can fix a colour issue. I once conned a paint shop that gave away paint sample pots (only in flat :( ) that I was doing a feature wall in a special light grey - took sample strips out to the Brumby "Yeah, this one please " :D

I have a brown unit available, these are rare as in any colour. I have found 4 brown, 1 blue and 1 grey in probably 4 years and you don't see MY's in wreckers much anymore.

I have a brown one in my Brumby, and used grey vinyl spray to get a close match. Probably still have some of the spray left too.

Note that you will still need a fairly short CD player or the back of the unit will hit the heater box.

PM me if interested.
1989 Brumby - Shiny new red paint, stroked EJ20 phase 2 SOHC with Darton sleeves bored to EJ22, Wiseco high-compression pistons, Delta 2000 grind cams , EJ/XT6 5 stud with WRX 4/2 pots, 5-speed, 86 GTS seats and so much more.
Contact me for reproduction XT6 hubs...and EA82 rear discs.

That was one of the reason's for doing the mod I mentioned, so I could fit a decent size head unit in there ... 8-)

The finished product...

Post by Chopper05 » Mon Sep 17, 2012 12:49 pm

And here is the finished product......well almost. I got my hands on the console, thank you dfoyl. Its all sprayed up with charcol vinyl paint, and fitted in the car. Painted the console area around the gear shifter as well as with most brumbys it was all faded in looking a bit ordinary. Just need to go over the ash tray and fit another switch to fill the whole (which will turn on my tray lights :D)

I also fitted the 6.5" Jaycar Kevlar speakers into the doors, mounted on custom made MDF spacers and covered them with VR/VS commordore speaker/door pocket trims. Again the colour match aint perfect but it looks the goods (from afar) n gives me extra storage. Thanks El Feddo for that suggestion. Stereo pumps as is so wont be worrying about my amp.
