Can I cut the bottom lip on the inside of a fender?

Hi

I'd like to trim away some sheet metal for clearance for my 27x8.5-14 tyres.
I did a mock trim on the touring wagon and it seems just inside the fender,
about 10cm inboard of the wheel well is a vertical seam.
At the bottom of this seem looks like some kind of spot weld.
When I cut this spot on the touring wagon, there still seemed to be plenty of metal left.

Ideally,
I'd like to trim this vertical seam at the bottom from a straight ridge
to one with a slight curve at the bottom, giving extra clearance for turning.
To prevent corrosion I was going to run a bead of silicone rubber over it to prevent water entry,
then re-fit the plastic inner-liner of the front fender (guard) for splash-protection

Any problems with this?
would I need to reinforce where I cut the lip?

Just cut it.

Or you can fold it. A BFH is good at that
