i couldn't resist.

MY97 Subaru Outback

Neat as a pin.
Auto.
All the fruit (albeit leather...if i want leather, i'll go and sit on a cow!)
No sunroof (ahh well. most i saw had both leather and sunroof or neither)
180k k's (not bad, considering its a 9 year old car)

$12k.

A little out of the range I wanted to spend, but really there aren't many second hand subarus out there... along the whole stretch of Parramatta Road (from Parramatta, including auto alley, stopped at Leichardt, didn't see the point in going on...) Only saw one other tempting subaru, it was a MY98 Outback, took it for a test drive, and it was OK, but it was manual, and the engine hunted up and down in the rev range. Only one other car that was of interest was a Gen 1 Series 2 Liberty Auto, with also 180k kms.

Once the bank balance repleneshes itself a bit, its time to start the mods!!

as for the charade? sure, it wasn't no subaru, but the closest thing to it was around $6k, and even then, there weren't that many!

I figured, that If I was spending $5k or more, I may as well buy a subaru!
Now to dine on 2 minute noodles for the next year or so...

I take delivery of the car during the week.

Mods? What do you think this is????

Hopefully, in the not too distant future, some lift would be sweet.
Then some more aggressive tyres... not oversized though...
LSD rear end would help matters offroad... or even go hardcore WA styles and weld the bugger.....(LOL! NOT! :P)
maybe then some subaextreme gear.... probably not now that they're no longer is business...

Legacy Projector Headlights with HID's... (is this too ricey perhaps??)
Later, maaaaaaybe, an EJ20 Turbo with VTD slushbox...

for now though, I guess I can play with the auto thats in it now....

The Quad Cam 2.5L Seems nice and torquey, and even with the aircon on, doesn't seem to dent the perfomance of it in the slightest!

One thing worthy of mention, was that I did manage to find a lifted L series Wagon. White, 91 model, with 2" Lift, Scorpion Rims, Cooper Mud Terrain tyres, Neat sparco steering wheel. STi stickers everywhere. And a big milo tin of a canon out the back. And a fake, unpainted bonnet scoop (underbonnet was standard EA82 Carby motor) Thought "what a w***er...", then looked inside. The driver's and passenger's seats were covered with those slip on seat covers. Pulled them off, to reveal a pair of late model STi buckets from a WRX 8O

Started it, and it had the typical EA82 passenger side tick tick tick....
Also had the beginnings of the dreaded 'L' Rust of around the windscreen..

$3500 was the window sticker on it... albeit the almost non existant rust and rice, it was a very tidy wagon. Also appeared to have rather fresh looking KYB's and kings too!

Although yours is an auto something worth keeping in mind as it might still be relevant, in mine if I change gear before 3k rpm, usually even below 2.5k rpm, i easily get 700km out of 55L BUT if I give it some stick and drive it hard I get 300-350km out of the same 55L.

No idea how the autp compares though.

BVCP - was wondering about economy. thanks for your figures. the auto was bought to try and get lazier with my driving style, for economy reasons. well that, and auto's are apparently better offroad!! (so they say...)

took the beforementioned maroon one for a drive.... it was a manual. not being a huge fan of it, simply because of the colour, i took it out regardless for a test drive. Clutch didn't grab until 4/5's of the pedal travel out, and shuddered somewhat. when it came to test the aircon, WHOOSH!!! All you could smell was burnt clutch!!

Anyways, returned to the dealership, and he was somewhat upset at me that I decided not to buy the car despite him letting me test drive it, and me asking for a better price beforehand... it was like i was expected to buy it after that test drive!! WTF?? 8O

Saw a couple of other GEN3 Outbacks, all in excess of 20k, a GEN3 2.0L Lib wagon for $13k (rather rough looking though) and a fairly neat GEN1 S2 2.2L GX Auto Lib wagon with also 180k. Also saw a couple of LX FWD wagons fetching stupidly high prices....(~7-8k 8O ). There were a plethora of sedans though, most being GEN 2s....

Anyone know what ratio an MY97 auto outback runs by any chance?

Excellent stuff. The good thing with the Outbacks is the size tyres you can fit with out doing any thing else to it. The 2.5 will spin 28's with no worries at all.

the colour is bottle green on silver. pics were taken late in the afternoon. with the crappy camera phone

i chose the outback as it has a lot of goodies already in it, and wouldn't take much to modify it to the way i want.

And the H6 would be a poo-ee motor to try and turbocharge, EJ20 is the go. Or maybe you should look into a 2.5 turbo.....

You should try driving the h6 in any sort of 'spirited' way

towing the boat = 15.2L/100km
driving around town = 12L/100km
driving on the highway = 10L/100km

but shit it goes well
