EA82 flywheel trivia

Just weighed up ( i did say it was trivia!) a flywheel from EA82 four wheel drive at about 11kg and a 'wheel from an EA82T FWD Vortex to find it weighs the same.Thought I was onto a free performance mod there expecting a FWD flywheel to be lighter

So, do FWD NA Vortex and FWD L sedans i suppose, have lighter flywheels due to them having 200mm clutches as opposed to the 225mm jobbies found in later MY 4WD/ Brumbies?

I think you'll have to weigh the whole clutch/flywheel combination to find any weight difference.

From memory the 225mm clutch flywheel is lighter but like Bennie mentioned, you really should be weighing the complete package, as the extra size of the pressure plate will take up the lost weight from the 2 flywheels.

The EA81 (225mm) flywheel is different to the EA82 (225mm) flywheel. Also the clutch kits are different due to the differences in the clutch release bearing.

My bits are two flywheels both of 225mm both L stuff EA82- assuming the clutch is same between 4WD L Series 5 speed NA or turbo and the FWD turbo Vort, I won't have any difference.
I recall the FWD NA Vorts got a 200mm clutch - expect they got a lighter flywheel

After machining and fitting the wrong flywheel to the EA82 during heads off service and gearbox changeover, I had the stock carby flywheel lightened by approx 3kg (The machinist got a little carried away;). Well lets just say you have to adjust your gear changes a little now, but it hasn't greatly affected the car for the worse!

Generally it makes it easier to change gears because the engine revs drop faster meaning the syncromesh doesn't have to work as hard to equalise gear speeds .
Downside is its easier to stall the engine at very low revs .

There are positives and negatives to extra flywheel innertia .
