Greased brake pads!

Post by LIFTED » Tue Jun 25, 2013 10:49 am

I have to share the stupidity of this.

I recently bought a Forester(privately) and the front wheel hub bearing needed replacing it made the brakes rattle and made a loud noise.
When I first drove the car there wasn't much brake noise but I noticed they didn't seem to pull up very sharply.
Ok so I took the car round to RSR555 to change the hub with one I got from a wreckers. (and that's another story )
We found some clever person had put grease, yes GREASE! on the brake pads!
WHAT THA FLICK! unbelievable!

My guess is they were greased to stop the severe vibration they would've made with the stuffed hub

Yeah, if done to stop a squeak they were a moron. If it was done to quiet a dodgy hub so they could sell it, that's pretty scummy.

nah, tis an old water repelling trick to improve braking in the wet , think I went to school with the former owner - he used to oil his bikes brake blocks for improved wet weather brakes :D

Yep Toonga I think it was done for that reason to sell the car. He said he was a heavy machine truck eletrician. So he must have known about cars.

I've seen people put grease on the back side of brake pads when all the little shims & stuff are long gone. It's supposed to stop the pads rattling round in there. I used to order the shims & put them back in.
