Outback tailgate lights

The wife was alerted by another motorist today that her brake lights were out in our 2000 Outback. I've done a check, and the high-mount brake light works fine, but nothing in each side light on the tailgate. Are there meant to be more than one brake lights, other than just the high mount along the top of the rear window?

Also, I notice these tailgate side lights have blinker bulbs (which work fine BTW), but only the right hand side has another bulb in the lower section (for the red section). What is this light for? Nothing I've tried, including fog lights seem to make it go on.

So you are saying only your centre high brake light works and the ones incorporated with the blinkers either side of the tailgate dont?

The single filament bulb in the tailgate garnish is for the rear fog light, which isnt wired in.

I wired it in as well as installed a new socket in the left hand side to give me 5 brake lights, but for some reason my images have disappeared

The only brake light I have is the centre high mount - no side brake lights at all, either in the tailgate or the body.

I've checked all the fuses and they're fine.

Have you checked the bulbs? To remove the rear light assembly you have to undo 2 nuts from behind the 2 removable pieces of trim behind the lights
