I know you have stated that it did not happen before but AM is notorious for interference! Buildings, bridges and so on can all affect AM reception. This is why most radio stations are on FM.
I have the original factory AM radio in my 1974 sedan and the radio is always dropping out if something is overhead, like a bridge! The actual tuner knob often stops working in the these older Subarus but it is often quite simple to remove the radio, 'pop its lid' and get it working again. I have done this several times with mine.

Under my very basic understanding; AM radio uses lower frequency waves than FM so the quality is less, but it can travel much larger distances than usual FM.
I guess this would make it also more susceptible to breakup?
Interesting anyway.
