99 forester to 05 ej20 transplant

Hi guys new to this forum.Recently bought 99 forester LX ran it around town for a week, all seemed fine. when i took it on the highway it started to overheat bubbles in radiator and very strong smell of exhaust and a lot of pressure in radiator. Suspect blown head gasket or cracked head. spoke to the guy i bought the car from, who had an 05 model he was wrecking and assured me it would fit and it does fit just doesn't run, i kept the old 99 intake manifold too keep the wiring the same sensors and such. both engines seem identical apart from the 05 has a cam shaft position sensor and the 99 doesn't.
So end result is i have car in shed with 05 engine that wont run:(, is there some way to get this to run that doesn't include new ecu and a rewire or going back to the old engine and fixing what ever its issue was.
looks like Ive done something terribly silly taking the route that i did, Not enough research (none) seemed like a good idea at the time.
I hope there's an easy fix but i suspect there's not any help much appreciated

Hello and welcome to AUSubaru
If the 05 model engine is from a Forester it will be a 2.5L.
Can you post a detailed photo of the cam sensor on the 2.5 and a photo of where it isnt on the 2.0?

did you change the pulley on the crank? The one the timing belt runs on, that the crank angle sensor reads. there should be a different number of teeth if it's anything like the swap I did.

No mate was just heading down that path to look at timing. just taking both timing covers off to see what i find.
did you just change the crank pulley or both cam pulleys as well ? would have thought they would be a set

Hmmm. I did the swap a while ago, so I can't remember if I changed the cam pulleys. I think they were the same. I will have a look tomorrow.
BTW, mine was a 92 EJ22 into a 98 Forrie.

Is the '99 Foz the one with the ECU mounted on the driver's side of the engine?
If changing the timing pulley on the crank to the one that came off the car sorted the issue for Point, I'd be swapping the entire cam belt setup to the original EJ20's - unless one is a SOHC and the other a DOHC (Single/Double OverHead Cam)... Then just swap the crank pulley/gear and see how that changes things. You could do a test fire before you put it completely back together incase that doesn't work!
Cheers

It should be mate. Im running a Outback 2.5 in my 01 Foz this way. Had to swap the crank gear. I just left the xam senaor unplugged as the computer for the foz 2.0l doesnt need a cam sensor.
