What can be used from a 1st gen Forester on a Brumby ?

I have taken the EJ plunge with an auto 1998 Forester GX, and bought the whole car cheap enough to resell the parts I can't use and adapt anything I can use.

So, obviously the gearbox & panels are of no use. The auto ECU I have read can have the auto signal grounded out and re-used with the L-series manual gearbox I plan to retain.

I'm thinking from the interior the front seats and of course all relevant electrical cabling. Maybe the steering wheel to get an airbag system (seems a waste to throw out the rest of the system that is already wired in, and the sensors used on the Forester could be fitted to the Brumby) - or maybe I'm just going to create a bigger danger.

if I move to 5-stud are the front brakes usable ? And any parts from the rear brakes ?

Fuel pump and fuel lines should be reusable. Much of the exhaust system will be used, ditto the engine mounts.

Anything else ?

If you can get one of those brake conversion kits, like this one showthread.php?t=24911 you can use all of the brakes and bits and pieces on your brumby.

The ECU can be used (they are the same as the manual) you will need to find the wiring diagram /pin out for the ECU and find the wires for the neutral switch, park switch and idle switch, and make sure they are wired properly for the ECU to work as a manual ECU.

I wouldn't use the airbag system as the brumby has too many differences in the body structure compared to the forester.

Would be a nightmare to wire up as well.

Depends on how deep your pockets are, as to how much you can use. I've seen many setups including one that used the whole suspension and running gear from a Liberty put into a red Brumby (90Brumby), so really need to know what you want to spend on it.

You know the XT Forester is a DOHC engine, so you'll need to modify the chassis rails to allow for clearance? You will also need to modify the Brumby Engine Crossmember to allow for the up-pipe to the turbo. Plus a hell of a lot more mods (like radiator, wiring, etc..) I'd highly recommend you keep the front and rear brakes off the Foz and fit the 5 stud conversion kit to the Brumby.

As for parts off the Foz, I'd keep all of it until you've done the conversion and once you're happy with it, then just sell off the remainder bits.

I thought the XT was released in like 2003. Is this a turbo car dfoyl?

Oops, should have said "GX" not "XT". Definitely *not* the Turbo - I specifically looked for a SOHC to avoid the chassis rail (and engineering) headaches.

Ok that sounds better. Still would recommend keeping all the car until you're happy with the conversion before getting rid of parts.

Definitely Brakes if you are thinking of the engine.
