Fuel economy

Has there been a "real"(AUSubaru drivers) fuel consumption comparison done between vehicles?
I guess it would have to be done using GPS distances as trip meters vary.
Would be interesting to find out.
Angel gear would be banned for this Steptoe:)

It would be confusing to include modified or LPG cars, so maybe two lists, standard and modified, details should be listed (only the ones that are significantly going to effect economy, not subs, lights, radios, bling etc).

Just read Pezimm saying 10.2 for an 07 Forester.
My Gen1 OB, (standard) gets 8.47 in freeway traffic/highway 110 mix, since I did the injectors, was getting 9.5.

Average 6.5L per 100kms from a Twin carb EA81 FWD 5 speed in a Fugly.

highway or city cycle is anothe variable, and not to forget the "to the tank" figures

A great expression when some only get so many kms from one tank and don't realise that their 45 litre "tank" measures is actually 10 litres shy of the tank capacity in various older models at least.

I know I got 609km to a GEN2 Brumby "tank" from full to splutter empty, highway running on std ULP. Whether that was to 50, 55 or 60 litres is subject to debate - until I get to measure up an old tank

There are older fuel economy threads that may be better to keep this theme going.

That 6.5 litre figure of Willys is pretty damn good for old eight valve head design !

My brumby has gotten 720km to the tank anf was below the E but not spluttering. Stock EA81 with 4 speed.

My Forester as a 2.0l managed 550km to a tank around town.. best I got was 760km cruising at 100km for 7hours or so. With its 2.5l engine it does 500 around town and ~650km on the highway.

2003 outback with jdm 2.0l wrx motor with exhaust and tune manages 500-550km every tank. Even when driven hard.

But how many litres per 100kms? This will give true fuel economy.

Best ever I got from 41 litres in the Fugly was 660kms (this was cruisng along the Newell Hwy up to QLD.
The book says the tank is 45 litres but I've never run it that low that I've put in more than 42 litres yet.

41 ÷ 660= 0.0621212 x 100= 6.21212 litres per 100kms.

I Average 620 kms per 40 litres.

40 ÷ 620= 0645161 x 100= 6.45161 litres per 100 kms.

1986 Vortex, stock as can be, usually get around 8/100km going to and from work, and it will hit 7/100km or slightly better depending on how I drive it on the HWY.

1982 wagon doesnt really count as it has shaved head and numerous other things done to it. Usually around 10/100km in the city and slightly better on the HWY. Wagon is more sensitive to how I drive it compared to the vortex.

My '84 wagon use to get 8.5 litres per 100km around town (mainly footpath driving, too many idiots on the roads) but about 5.5 l/100 at 110kph highway cycle.

My Brumby with a worn EA81 225,00kms used to get about 10 litres per 100 kays combined driving. On the highway it would drop to about 9/100kays. I thought that was quite good for a tired motor which chewed the oil.

'02 SG Forrie stock with a pod and bike on the roof would get 9.7 l/100km on 95, and 9.1 l/100km on 98 mainly highway driving.

'92 Lib with a Forrie EJ20 would get 8.6 l/100km around town.

My Brumby used to drink about 12 l/100km

84' Brumby with Weber 32/36 and 2" exhaust, 1 3/4" headers/Y pipe

Just did 518 k's and used 44 litres of 95 RON. So 8.49L per 100 k's. That was driving at 110 km/h most of the time.

MY04 H6 Outback premium with 175,000km on standard sized road tyres.
Using 98 or 95RON:
City 11-13L/100km
Country 9-10L/100km
Best I've ever seen was 8.8 with a tailwind from Sydney to Melbourne. Average over past 20,000km has been a touch over 10L.

MY04 forester XS luxury EJ251 with 230,000km on standard road tyres.
All highway driving so far (3000km).
Using 91RON:
8L/100km

or speaking in real economic terms - EA81 1.0mm oversize 38,000km on it, 20/60 cam, spfi inlet manifold, EA82 Y pipe, 4 speed cost me just over $50.00 to do 502? km of mixed driving on dedicated LPG

I got 21 litres per 100 kms when I had the draw through supercharger on the trike. But it had blown head gaskets and a worn rubber on the wiper

Might as well just pour fuel from a jerry can straight into the engine, would probably be more efficient!

spoke too soon

wolfing through the stuff, got a miss, now pee'd off on comp test results.

40,000km since full rebuild ...#'s 1 & 3 130 psi, 2 & 4 150, 160 psi HOT

a cold in the morning gave another 8 or 9 psi in each pot.

My EA81 with 1/2 M km has 170 and 180 psi

starting to suspect the new pistons were a compromise to suit EA71 and EA81 and not a patch on the genuine slugs.

The 0.5M km baby may be back sooner than I thought, shout it some new valve springs maybe ??

Performiong like an old Volvo . It's got Volvo suitable rings on its slugs
