Which Subaru forester model would you recommend

Post by nairobery » Tue Oct 28, 2014 5:51 pm

Selling the Legacy bg5 n planning on buying a used Subaru forester non turbo automatic for wifey, just wona make the right choice as there are so many models.

Which year model ?
What is a safe milage to look out for?

Generally what should I look for coz I think I must have overlooked something's when getting the legacy and it ended up costing a lot in repairs.

How much money do you have to spend?? A new one? 2nd hand?
A 05-07 SG is a good pick. Check for service history, suspension noises, oil leaks, clunky gearboxes and just the usual.

Thanks and it would be 2nd hand. Why your preference on the 05-07 model?

What budget are you looking at as Im looking for a forester as well. I personally Like the 03-05 shape better with the sharper front headlights v the more rounder newer model.

The newer 05-07 SG has variable valve timing built into the engine making it more efficient all round.
also has a better auto gearbox thats more responsive.

Other than that they are similar..

Didn't know anything about variable valve timing, thanks

Budget around 10k US$, used cars are really expensive here we hardly buy anything new coz of the cost is ridiculous like 70% are ex Japan.

Here's a pic

I dig the top mounted double din unit. Is that factory?
If not does anyone know of a source?

Hi julian,

It's factory made for JDM I believe...

You can find all bits from japanparts.com

I've got a complete set sitting in the garage to be installed as soon as I make my mind up on which head unit to get.

The double din unit is factory JDM. They're really common.

I've seen that cream interior in the flesh and it's just as yellow as it looks in the photos. I'm not a fan. I reckon the NZDM interior is much better.

As it's a Jap import, it'll have an EJ20 with a 4EAT, so it'll be gutless as.

We settled on this, JDM EJ204 dohc. A bit low but I hope some springs and shocks will raise it a bit
