which to mod and build up

My wife has a 2001 limited duel range I am looking at a 2003 XS Duel range which is likely to be the better of the two to mod and build into an offroader?

^Assuming both are Foresters?
I would go with the 2003. Being an SG body, it has a lot more stuff available to it and they're getting easier to find...

The fact that you have specified that they are both Dual Range tells me that they are both Manual...
In that case, the 2001 (SF Forester) has a lower standard Low Range than the 2003 (SG Forester) model does.
But as pezimm has said above, the SG offroad parts (i.e. Bullbar, Sump Guard etc) are a little easier to come by than the SF parts.
