Steering Rack to Tie Rod Lock Washers

Post by Gazza01 » Thu Mar 03, 2016 6:08 pm

Im setting up a replacement steering rack with new Tie Rods and Tie Rod end for my Brumby however I cannot locate those Lock washers that lock the Tie Rod to the Steering Rack. Do I really need them I know I can pull the Tie Rod up really tight onto the Steering Rack. Can I use some kind of lock adhesive on the thread to replace the lock washers.. Any ideas out there.

If you can't find any at the wreckers - could try Repco or similar, they should have them Just take in a sample and get them to match it ...

On my Datsun I used red high strength loctite thread sealant, because I had rack spacers and there is nowhere to put the lock tab. I can't say how safe it is but that is what everyone who uses spacers does.

Try a steering specialist they are probably the same as later subaru manual racks.

Repco, Bursons etc would only likely supply an exchange rack from somebody else and keep nothing more than boots and outer steering joints.

i was running rack spacers for a short time on my drift Forester. i just used loctite on the threads. had no drama for the time i was using it (abusive track work)

(for those who had thoughts on running rack spacers... dont. they allow the shaft to go past the 'stoppers' and will your rack will fail real soon)
