Cant get into reverse.

Post by Gazza01 » Mon Aug 08, 2016 2:44 pm

Ive been having trouble getting my Brumby into reverse. Made an inspection of of bushes at bottom of gear leaver shaft all are OK, but the pin that goes into the shaft that goes into gear box is all loose. I have found a picture of the thingo which says cotter pin together with spring pin. Has anyone any info on what I would have to purchase to replace this pin.Nos 14/42 & Have attached photo.

You need a drill bit, angle grinder and a bolt with a nylon locking nut.

Then you do this with it:

As Bennie said above, cut a slot and use a bolt in place of that roll pin. I've got one of those roll pins genuine still in packet, never got round to using it though  If you just replace the pin the same thing will happen again very quickly.
Will it ever end!?

The lift kit could be causing the selector arm to be rubbing on the gearbox tunnel

Yes checked that out. The selector arm is loose where pin goes through the gear lever fitting. Will have to replace the pin with a bolt probably like El Freddo has shown cant get the spring pins and Cotters pins anymore.

Even if you could get the pins it wouldn't eliminate the slop - the holes in the shaft and that arm elongate over time, so even a new pin won't sort the issue out.

This bolt trick will do the job perfectly. And if the bush on the top of the gearbox is worn, replace this too as I think this is the main cause for the pin hole to shag out in the first place. The bolt trick will only be a bandaid if you don't sort out the bush.

You'll probably have to drill the hole in the selector shaft to a larger diametre to get rid of the slop.
