Brumby Engine Conversion

Could my Brumby handle an EJ20? According to the engine specs thread, an EJ20 puts out 85kW @5600 and 170Nm @4400 (is this @ the flywheel?) and that seems to be not much more than an EA81- Could I put the EJ20 in without replacing diffs/gearbox/axle shaft assembleys, etc?

the EA81 has made an appearance on the torque and kilowatts post using same DIN reference for power figures the EA81 is 60 kW and the EJ20 is 92kW - there is a bit of difference there ain't there.

My EJ20G (turbo) powered MY coupe uses almost standard front axles and completely stock rear axles. Flywheel HP for the most of its running life was around the 180kw mark, I'm basing this figure on the various upgrades and higher than stock boost level.

I found the only CV joints to have problems with the additional power were the rears. The front CV angle in my coupe was however relatively small - this must have been a contributing factor to their longevity.

There are several other MY's (MY being the same vehicle body style/platform as a Brumby) running EJ22's that I know of, and they don't have any adverse effects on their driveline that are due to the higher HP output.

You can fit the EJ20 in front of an L series gearbox, I suppose the same is possible with an MY but it would require a bit of creativity. Personally I'd go for the extra cog and larger clutch and fit an L series box at the same time.

I'm leaving the Brumby at FWD, so it presumably wouldn't affect the rear axles. So, you reckon I could fit an EJ20G in front of an L series box and it wouldn't require any other major modification? Would this make it unroadworthy/too powerful for me to handle?

You could, but being a turbo motor the EJ20G would require subframe and crossmember modification, and the Brumby would end up driving like a Civic on steroids, not good.

The EJ20 NA motor could be slotted in there relatively easily, and if you're only going FWD you may as well bring across the EJ gearbox too, means you get a tougher clutch and no need for an adaptor plate.
I'm in the midst of a similar conversion, I'm putting an EJ16 and its FWD box into an MY sedan.

So if I put a naturally aspirated EJ20 in, it would just fit in without crossmember mods, etc and an EJ gearbox would just bolt straight in? And it would still get traction? lol

It would all fit, it doesn't all bolt in though. The bit I'm stuck on in my EJ16 project is the gearbox crossmember - I am the world's most indecisive person! I have fabbed up a solution, and will post details and pictures if it all works.

Have a read of the EJ conversion sticky in the Conversions forum.

hurry up with your cross member solution tim..... i need ideas
im just starting an NAEJ20 conversion in my brumby... ive got as far as taking the old engine, gearbox front suspension out and now im just thinking what to do next... go for the complete swap of the impreza loom or piggy back the impreza engine loom into the brumby harness???

What gearbox are you intending on running? This solution I'm stuffing around with is only applicable to the 5 speed FWD EJ box. The AWD boxes are a lot easier to mount.

As for the loom, the piggy back solution is by far the easiest. Strip down the harness until you have enough to run the engine, then patch it in to the Brumby's harness. Delete any unnecessary wires.

You need to know that it is only the motors with one cam on each side that fit with out having to modify the chassis. EJ18, 20, 22, 25 will all fit simply as long as they only have the one cam on each side.

i hope so
my old man is holding my hand on my first conversion and since we bought a front cut he wants to make use of every thing..... his dream is a brumby with EJ20, power steering and air
i was planning on using the brumby crossmember but if i used the impreza one i could make use of the power steering. has any one done this?
also i have heard that the impreza steering column can fit but is difficult.. can any one explain?
thanks,
kiel
P.S sorry for the hi jack joe...... but you could probably use some of this info too if your planning a conversion :)
