What gearbox is best 4 ej brumby

How are you?
The motor ideas in the previous thread about putting the ej22 into my brumby ran into gearbox ideas. I've chosen the L series 5 spd because of dual range and simplicity to install, the L series cv's sleeve straight onto the EA's shaft and as for the rear the diff ratio it would be the same providing the box was out of the same ratio as your cars diff. The liberty box bolts straight onto the motor but I am on the understanding that to get the cv's at front to link up with the gearbox is a major issue ,unless someone out there has discovered different? Then of course you would probably have to change the rear diff in your car to match the ratio of the Liberty box, to prevent wind up. But the conversion would be good particulaly if it's a constant 4wd box because having driven a Brumby conversion the trouble with all that new power up front plays havoc on keeping a straight line with the power /torque making the steering wheel pull, unless again someone has some solutions for that as well?
Hoping some can contribute to this thread with perhaps ideas or suggestions.
Regards Cheffy.

leon aka subarute has done the ej22 motor and box and rear diff into brumby.the front shafts you just change the inner cup with the lib ones ,a job which can be done at home.a new tailshaft and the rear shafts i don't know if they fit str8 on.if you use a 3.9 lib box there r 3.9 l diffs that would bolt str8 in and me thinks the shafts r the same spline as my.

didnt the brumby's have a 3.9 rear anyways? That would mate straight up to a 3.9 lib dual range box..

The only tricky part of using the EJ box is the custom tailshaft, the rest as has been said above is easy.

The tail shaft is a piece of piss.
Get an L series or liberty front half, cut it off about a foot away from the uni, cut the brumby shaft off at the uni, slide the L piece inside the brumby tube and weld it up....

Beautiful, I love it.

Dodgy, I don't.
I've got the constant EJ box in my coupe and all I did was get a custom single piece shaft made up. Cost me $300 and its one of the few things I don't need to worry about.

The one in my red rx when I did it was a chopped L series shaft, 55mm cut out of the chop, and expanded on an exhaust pipe expander to be a slip fit, then slipped over the pipe, the pipe butted and the expanded bit placed over the join and welded up. Not a worry at all, no vibration was fine. Cost was a bit of welding wire thats it... The L/Liberty stub slipped inside a MY cut off pipe as way less dodgy than this method!!
I also know of conversions on this board that were done as I described in the earlier post with no worries. You only need a couple of inches of the L/Lib pipe, but longer is better as there is less movement before welding...

So the L/EJ shaft is a good fit into the MY one? Sweet!

Yeah, it slides in perfectly.

If done right there is nothing dodgy about it, especially if doing it to a two piece shaft as the weld will end up right at the end of the shaft where they would normally be welded anyway. Brett and I made the one in his RA EJ20T powered Vortex like this and it never broke, so I dont think an EJ22 is going to cause it any trouble. What makes it so good is you can slide it together without welding, then mount it under the car, make some marks and adjustments if needed, and tack it together, even shim it to get it perfectly centered if you like, then pull it out and fully weld it to finish it off, this way the length is perfect to suit your individual car. If balancing is a concern, then take it in and get it balanced when finished.

So do the inner CV balljoints out of a brumby fit in the EJ boxes inner CV cups?

No you would use the liberty cv cups that the guys are saying connect straight onto the EA Brumby front shafts.

So the whole inner CV joint off a older Lib with fit onto the shafts of a Brumby. I thought they used different splines, or is it because the early Libs used 3.9 rear diffs they also used 23 spline front shafts?

If you get an EJ box with 23 spline output shafts then you don't need to modify your cv's at all, it's only if your EJ box has the 25 spline output shafts.

There is definately one combination that works.
I bought a new inner set for a Series one Lib which went onto my normal CV shaft. Granted mine is an L series shaft but it is the sam as an MY one.
You just have to be prepared to open them up and fit them together.
My box is an RX box with the same size stubs as an EJ.

No, you take the cups off your brumby shafts and fit on the cups off a Liberty 4wd. You use every thing MY or L series except for the inner cups.

Talking to me Brett?
I think we both posted at the same time.

Slightly off topic here:
What models can you get the engine and gearbox out of? Is it only Liberty's? Is it only 90 to 94 models? And how do you tell if its a D/R, just say if I couldn't look at the car myself, how do I find out through the seller?
Thanks for your help guys.

Any of the newer generation subaru's use the EJ series engine, Impreza, Forester, Liberty, Outback. I think the foresters and outbacks use a lower ratio final drive but don't quote me on that.
