Hi all

Well i have just got hold of a 83 GLF hardtop the gold color one.

I have decided to to try one of these cars out as they drive well and look good.

OK i need some info in which way to go about some mods that i have planned.


I want to make it a turbo AWD 5 speed manual

I believe that there is a EA81 turbo engine & is this EFI?

Is there a constant AWD gearbox or do you have to use the D/R one?

Is there a disk brake rear end that can fit?

Is there a bigger front brake setup that i can use?

Your input will be greatly appreciated

Have a good scan through the other sections on this board, particularly in Troubleshooting, Engines etc, Conversions.

This has been posted up a few times recently with replies or add your own.

A little site searching may yield a bit more info for you too.

I have spent quite a few hrs already searching through the sections alot of it is about the ea82 engine and cutting chassis's to fit i don't want to go down that track as the car i have is in very good condition with a very good engine.

Plus the post's don't seem to clarify what i need to know. although the s4 RX7 conversion looked good but if i wanted a rotary i would have got a mazda.

PS: i might take a six pack for the boys at the wrecking yard and have a yak spend some time there and take measurements.

Cutting & rewelding the chassis rails isn't really dodgy if its done right. The section of chassis thats modified serves two purposes, one is to hold up the nose section (radiator, lights, bumper) and the other is to fold in in the event of a crash. Not exactly rocket science.

Have a read of my sig. I own a 1982 GLF hardtop, red in colour. It's a turbo single range constant AWD 5 speed with rear disc brakes. So to answer your questions...

Yes you can make it a turbo 5 speed manual.
There is an EA81T, this motor is EFI.
There are a variety of constant AWD boxes, as far as I know they are all 5speeds. You could use a D/R box, but for a road car why bother?
The rear disc brakes off an L series RX Turbo or GLTA will fit, they pretty much bolt on.
The only upgrade paths for front brakes available are to either stay with the solid rotors but order them in slotted, or swap over calipers and rotors and go with ventilated rotors, which you can also order in slotted. Stay away from the slotted / drilled jobbies .

And finally, another 2c (to bring it up to 20c!), the EJ turbo conversion is well worth it. If there is an EA81T out there making anywhere near the power of my mildly modified EJ20G, it's a timebomb.
