I know of many examples of standard EA82s performing well past the 300,000km mark, as my own is, but I was wondering how many k's you guys with EA82Ts have covered - I'm considering an EA82 conversion, how long can expect one thats covered already 200,000kms to last? Does the turbo significantly reduce the lifespan and reliability of the engine?

There is no reason why it should not go on and on. That said however what are you talking about? The longevity before it will need to be rebuilt or longevity of being able to source components into the future.

My initial thought are that it would depend more of thinks like;
- Your driving style (how hard you de/accelerate).
- Regular servicing and maintenance of components.
- Stock engine vs modified.

As for how long mine have lasted in terms of km’s is hard to say as I did not monitor to closely and I have always driven it hard, always serviced the last engine was raced and then went 4WDing where it got regular submerges/covered in water/sand/dust, this being said it lasted 10 years. The new engine is getting the same punishment so I’ll let you know.

yeah well i'm not sure how the EA82T that i'm looking at has been driven or serviced, I was just a little curious if people had noted a significantly shorter lifespan of the EA82Ts compared with the non-turbo before needing serious rebuilding

Nope, its all good.

Ours has about 350k on it and is blowing smoke, needs rings. It is still making reasonable power though.

We bought it with well over 300k on it and have no idea to what extent it had been trashed or mistreated in the past.

They are a perfectly good motor that if treated correctly will last a lifetime. Most of the bad press they got was from new owners turning the boost up on older engines and cooking the motor and doing headgaskets.

so you reckon dropping an EA82T thats done 200k in my l-series wagon will have plenty of life left in it

i checked out an carbyed L series the other week to buy. it had done 360,000 k's but had been reconditioned at bout the 300,000k mark. was running sweet

yeah well my carbie L series has just past the 300,000 mark and it goes well, clutch on last legs though

my ea82t has 320k on the clock and going strong.... well gonna need head gaskets soon,
but thats only really coz i want to wind up the boost a bit more
