How do I fit a head unit in my L series dash???

Just bought a new Pioneer head unit for my wagon and after spending about an hour neatly trimming the dash to fit it in, I gave it a trial fit only to realise that there is not enough depth to push the head unit all the way in. It sticks out of the dash about 30mm! What can I do? I need some ideas. Thanks, Marty.

Yeah, I think that's what I will have to do. The RCA leads that go to the amp come straight out of the back of the deck. If I get some that have right angle plugs coming out then it might sit closer in.

make a plate up OR if you can find the later electronic radio remote mount the face of the unit you have in those brackets.

I can get my hands on a plastic spacer that looks like it belongs in the car, but it is available in black only. They are about $55 + P&H

I mounted mine on an angle, there is a bit of a gap, but no where as bad as it was

You have to be carfull fitting stereos on angles... over a set angle the CD player becomes un able to properly protect aginast skipping when you drive over bumps. I have seen a JVC stereo sitting on a 45 degree angle skip everytime the driver drove over the little reflectors on the road.

I have heard that before, but i havent had any trouble with it. I think it has only ever skipped on some really rough corrogations on a dirt road.

Hey marty, i've made a spacer out of a block of wood for my car. My sisters L also has a spacer, they're both about 40mm thick... You don't want the stereo too close to the heater box, it gets pretty hot in there at times... One of my mates who is into competition sound keeps telling me how important it is to keep your deck cool...
And don't be worried about the gearstick (like i was)... it won't get in the way of your deck or vise-versa.

You will find that most good car stereo shops will sell spacer kit to fit the dash etc around $50.00 give or take . Far easier thab trying to make one and the aftermarket one i bought actually looks like original equipment.
One of the guys on this site is into this type of thing maybe he can help.
Helps to read the full thread, Isee hes already stuck his hand up.!!!

about the angle you can put your head unit on, i believe all pioneer suggest no more then 60 degrees, so your pretty safe tilting it.

Hey Bunyip,
Welcome to the Ausubaru forums... and you've made a good start on your posting.
Start a "thread" with you questions in the "Subaru Chat" forum. I'm sure there will be many that will help you out with any questions.
There's the title box up top which i think you've already found...
I'll keep it short, good luck and happy posting/motoring.
Cheers
