Diff locks

Post by Outback bloke » Wed Mar 28, 2007 4:02 pm

As most of you have read on these forums I have just bought an R160 diff with a diff locker in it. If there is enough interest I will look in to getting some more made using this one as template. The history on this diff will tell that they cost around $1500 brand new. I am expecting it to be a similar price this time round but with some shopping around I may be able to get them a little cheaper.

What I need is a hands up of those willing to buy one if I can get them for $1500 or less. Obviously the more we can get that want them the cheaper they will be. So, spread the word through your mates. Also direct members of other forums to this topic so we can get some decent buying power on this one.

It is not going to happen over night. I am hoping to get it all going within a month or so. SWKenobi and I will also be looking in to tooling up costs and fabricating them ourselves.

One way or another we will get these off the ground and available to every one at the best price possible.

We haven't pulled this diff apart yet ( I don't get it for another week) but we have spoken about the option of making them operated by air if possible. This will make them a candidate for front diffs as well. Also may be able to make them suit R180.

i will be up for at set definately

if you can make an air locker ill be up for 2 for sure

but just the mechanical locker then rear only

i was under the understanding there was already a locking option on a r180 diff

under 1500 sounds reasonable too, specially for low production item like these

oh and the longer you take the better at the moment as im totally strapped for cash

now if they are made air, they will be able to be used in the liberty/ awd as they will only be locked in when need be thus not floging out the centre diff as quickly?

I'll take one for the Brumby. If you make a locker for the Outback, I'll get one of those too.

Front air locker? I'm getting a woody just thinking about that. ;)

I would be interested only if they can be actuated by air or magnetic solenoid or similar - solong as it can be open or locked by the flick of a switch :)

As long as it drives on the road safely, my hand is firmly up for rear - and possibly front. I assume I would not need to use my LSD - just use a standard diff?

why do you guys want air operated lockers?

the mechanical locker works fine. Whats the appeal of the air locker?

for those who dont know....

detroit mechanical lockers operate when on and off the power

eg; give it a bootfull and it locks up

take it nice and gently and it stays open like a normal diff

so it should be perfectly fine for every day driving, just a little quirky if you have a heavy foot

well thats my understanding of it anyway

oh and an air locker would be awesome for the front, as a locked fromt makes things very difficult to turn and a helluva lot more prone to breakages because of the angles on everything when turning
