MY Clutches

The ol' girl is due for a new clutch soon and I'm buying a new one, but I've heard that there are two different types of clutches for the MY. How do I determine which type mine is?

there should be differences if they're two different types. if I pull it out and then have no clue what type it is, that's an hour I'd rather not spend. instead, if I pull it out and say 'ooohhhhh, yep' and order or buy the new one, then that's less hassle. innit.

There is a way,
small clutches are 19 spline and l've only ever seen them on single range 4wd.
large clutch is 21 spline and fitted to dual range 4wd.
Can someone please confirm this.

There is 8 inch and 9 inch versions (O.D. of the friction plate) but I was pretty sure the splines were the same.

I don't think there's a way to tell which you have with out pulling the car apart.

The L boxes have a different spline to the MY so if you're looking at doing the 5 speed conversion nows the time, otherwise you'll waste an almost new clutch.

Correct me if i am wrong, Both MY single and dual range gearbox "SHOULD" have the same 21 spline count.

I am in here to say that my 84 Brumby of unknown history had/has the smaller diameter clutch with dual range 4WD box. That'll be the cheaper clutch kit and using a Gemini friction plate so the thing fits the 5 speed dual range L series box in her now.

Thanks for the confirmation Jono and no need to be sorry about it, that's why l asked somebody to confirm.
l was told this many years ago and obviously believed it, so l'm grateful as l would rather be told l'm wrong than keep on believing something that is not true, after all, we all make mistakes and that includes, (as l've said before), me.

mine and tristans cars are the same model. shouldn't his clutch fit my gearbox? both DR, both older MYs.

I don't even know if it's my clutch that needs fixing now. I'm thinking it might even be my gearbox. I stuck it in 4th and chucked the handbrake on, gave it some revs and let it out. Car died as it should. Half the time when I'm at a stand-still and the clutch is in, and I wanna go into reverse, there's a mighty awful clunk when I select it. Has trouble sometimes going into 4th too, I just thought the clutch wasn't doing its job. Might fiddle with the clutch cable tommorow arvo, see what's up. Clutch seems far too easy to put in.

each clutch might fit each gearbox , 200 or 225mm, but clutch bits and flywheels are not interchangeable if they are different diameters from each other. Even if they are one VIN number apart, in twenty years you don't know what someone has done - like fitted another engine with other size flywheel and clutch, or fitted the smaller clutch and fly to save clutch price

just being cautious to these possibilties don't hurt

Get ur VIN number then ring subaru and ask them they shuld be able to tell u off of the VIN number

Yeah but his car could have had any model of clutch or gearbox changed since it left the factory 20+ years ago (i think someone said that already).

The simplest and easiest way is to take your clutch out, bring it in somewhere (like a clutch place) and say "gimme another one" !

it has original gearbox. that I can be sure of.
