hey everyone. Bit of a random question but why does a forester GT have 39 kw less power than a Impreza WRX which has the same engine?? Is it a different size turbo??? im talking about the forester models before the XT came out.

Most likely tuning, I'd say. The rex is tuned for maximum power and speed, whereas the forrester is more for reliability and probably low end power for towing and things like that.

At least, that's what I think. :P I've been wrong in the past.

I think it's from a different turbo.
WRX's aren't tuned for maximum power and speed, this is why people buy aftermarket ECUs and they certainly aren't tuned for unreliability :)

Well, most rex motors are pushed to the limit, or even close to it in the factory settings, so it doesn't take much to put the engine over the edge. hehe

They are a detuned version of the same motor with a smaller turbo.

There isn't a 39kw difference... the Imprezza just looks as though it would have more 8)

TF035 turbo and cams for a lower torque curve on the forester.

TD04 turbo and cams for a higher torque curve on the wrx.

The motors may have similar amounts of torque, but because the max torque happens at higher revs in the wrx, (power = torque x rotational speed), you get more horsepower from a wrx

they have higher compression ratios and less boost. If i remember rightly that is...

Different class of vehicle , different power delivery requirements . In a general purpose and occasionally cross country role the Foresters state of tune is better suited to its intended roles .

Compared to many things the EJ20 turbo engines have some very good and very bad qualities about them - from a purely performamance perspective that is . The lowest state of tune versions like all made to a price production engines do most things reasonably well . Getting off topic but the late classic STI's not much under 4 is just pathetic . The only subaru exhaust header and turbo system that truly addresses the real problem is the twin scroll single turbo versions . If you think otherwise do a few searches on the current JDM Legacy - 430 I think Nm of torque at 2400 rpm . Imagine that in your L or Liberty .

Cheers A .
