What is it you don't like about its appearance ? Just that it has not reatained the Subarus looks ? I agree, it no longer looks like a next gneration....

It looks like a ford focus, which is german designed, iirc. If you go to the subaru website (the .com one, if it's not on the .com.au one) you can watch the commercials, which boil down to german engineers muttering "vee vish vee hed designed dis car! die japanese haff a vinner here!"

Didn't they only just change to the old style two years ago or so? With the small grille in the middle, and the ones on the sides? I quite like that one.

This is a kunundrum - I don't like to new look too much - best description yet is the cross between a ford focus and a Yaris - byb I think.

But the Mrs is keen on getting a new car and says she wants one - says she loves them - yah she's keen on a Subi - boo its the new impreza !! but I'd be much happier in one of these than the current Camry.

I think we have to acknowlege the facts here...a significant proportion of models over the years have been met with a less than enthusastic response from the public and respected motoring journalists alike...a fact Subaru pounced from as a marketing opportunity right from the get go - for example, the 360 was advertised as 'Cheap And Ugly'.

The new imprezza (in my humble opinion) is a good looking car (spent the arvo in a dealeship haggling on a Forester) Trouble is, with such a choice of models, manufacturers etc etc the motoring public will vote with their wallet, and Subaru will have to respond with a facelift - remeber the bug eyed model for example.

But I (we) am not the typical Subaru customer(s)

Plus is that we zealots can by these cars, modify them, appreciating the technical aspects just that much cheaper because no else wants them!!

At first i was a little dissapointed it lost the frameless windows and that tough boy racer look. But i agree that subaru are trying to appeal to a wider market. And hopefully it will be suscessful.

As far as looking like other hatches, it looks very mazda3

Yes I think the new Impreza looks good too! Although I also like the look of my 1978 wagon and this is known as one of the 'ugly models', so perhaps my opinion does not count!

The framed doors are the hardest part to deal with, although one of the Subaru designers has suggested the Liberty my stick with frameless doors, I hope this is the case.

I think its strange that in photos the Impreza and Mazda 3 look very similar, yet in the 'flesh' they are really quite different. The Mazda has curves where the Impreza has angles, a bit like the BMW 1 Series. Still I like its looks.

I fear what they're going to do with the Outback... Though I think the outback has been going downhill in the looks department since they changed from the bodyshape I have... :P

well they are a fairly big market segment too........
looks almost exactly styling like the nissan tiida - which the advertising is very chick orientated......
The first WRX shape was/is the best. Don't like the shape of the new Outbacks either.
With Subaru maybe doing a diesel in the next year or ?, I can only wish subaru finally produces something that would compete with offroad vehicles like some of the Jeep models, or toyotas - so off-the shelf capabilities, and traction control,of course. And maybe hope a diff that can
have lockers built for em.
These other manufactures have crossed into subaru's original territory of soft-offroader, time subaru hits back and crosses into theirs.
There must be heaps of people who got subaru's and want something more for off-roading, familiarity with the brand would make it an easy decision.
Currently you need to start looking at others like Jeep/toyos/nissans/LR etc
They should scrap the outback/liberty different models,really they are both city/road cars,esp with the new models, very little differentiation between them anyhows. The outback suspension setup could be supplied as an Option.

Unfortunately the Outback looks like it's re-merging with the Liberty. For a while there it was a fairly distinctive separate model kind of in the spirit of the old L-series wagons, but you're right - the new ones don't look much different.


I still say they should have brought the Baja into australia, especially as a two-door with the Brumby style design on the front of the tray/back of the cab. As it was it wasn't much better than an outback for cargo capacity.


But then if we ran Subaru, things would be perfect, right? hahaha

Well , I like the Mazda 3, and its designer was inspired by the Alfa 147.

15 years from now . ya can lift one and chuck some new hybred doobawhacka motor in it ..

On the roads I have seen a few now, they just dont stand out and hit you with "I am a Subaru" look, they just tend to blend with the rest of the homogenized crapolas around with the current contemporary look.

Now take note that the nearest competitor Mitsubishi with the latest release Lancer X looks hot, has aggressive lines and frontal treatment, not soft like the Imprezza, even better with the Evo treatment. If the Subaru theory is to sell hatches to the feminine side, well is doesnt work to well, my neighbours wife across the road chose the new Lancer over Imprezza, Focus, Mazda 3 etc.

If they've gone with the option to appeal to a wider market, you wouldn't think they'd be having all this trouble selling units?

I think it's a shame that the lure of a wider market seems to make Subaru change designers so often. In business you must strive to at least make a profit while increaseing market share and growing your company. One cannot blame Subaru for that but I believe if they stuck with the original style and just upgraded the looks every model change the buyers would stick with them. Instead they make these massive visual changes that produce nicknames like "bug-eye" and "alfa romeo".

Personally, I don't mind the new WRX but I can see what others dislike about it. And where's the sedan? I know it's coming, but the sedan always outsold the hatch, why would they do that?

While I'm on the subject, can someone explain how viable it is to have 2 different vehicles competing in the same market segment? Namely the Liberty and the Forester. I reckon the Forester should have been 1/3 bigger ( same size as a Pathfinder) to start with. Leave the Liberty the same, drop the Outback, and they wouldn't have needed the Tribeca. Makes sence to me anyway
