stupid mistakes

Post by Soobidoo » Sun Jan 06, 2008 11:09 am

thuoght id start a topic with stupid mistakes that you've done while workin on ur car, thought id see what all of you guys have either forgotten to do or just havent thought about and then.... whoops, that shouldnt do that.. HAHAHA

anyway, heres my mistake, did it today while working on one of the oil vent lines, had to loosen the pipe comin from turbo to front mount, and after i had done, forgotten to tighten it, took it for a drive, hit 17 pound and BANG, shot the hose off!!! LOL, didnt hurt anything, just scared the crap outa me, also just a note, turbo cars dont like running without the turbo helping the car..... LOL seem to run a bit rich, like black smoke pouring from the back of the car, HAHAAHA, stupid me

remember: CHECK, CHECK, then CHECK AGAIN, start engine and check everything again! LOL

1) forgotten to put sump plug back in, lost 4litres of oil on the ground (gravel)
2) Jumper Leads from car to car - wrong priority (+ - = - +) caused wires to melt.. no damage - whew!)
3) Starter Motor turning wrong way
4) Reversed car with door open - bent the door - Lucky wasnt Subaru.
5) Over tighten nut bolts - snap!
6) Putting my hands at the same time fans started - ouch!!
7) Not tighten up automatic trans hoses - lost all fluid and had to ask someone to buy automatic fluid (not Subaru)...

There is more but cannot think of....
Cheers

Great idea for a thread! :)

- Jacked car on a grassy slope, came off jack, nearly snapped my arm in half.
- Hoisted engine/gearbox from car, wondered why the car started lifting up too - forgot one front driveshaft was still connected, result was busted inner CV joint.
- Installed new points into my old `76 Corona, forgot to wipe the thin layer of shipping oil from the points, they burnt out after a quick spin around the block.
- Undid the radiator cap too fast on my old `82 Sigma, it burst off and ejected super-heated coolant all over me - burns to 6% of my body (not actually that bad, mostly just a little bit of my chest and my arm that was right next to the cap). I was only 17 at the time and didn't know much about cars!
- Overloaded Dad's 6x4 trailer with sand and bricks, smelt burning rubber as I came to the end of my street, tyres were rubbing pretty badly on the tops of the guards.

I'll probably post again when I've had more time to think...I know there are many more.

Just last week i put my new up-pipe on for ready to put my new turbo on and dropped a nut down the downpipe, gonna have to pull that off again.

Started engine with breaker bar still on crankshaft pulley (done that 3 times now)

And forgot to do up wheel lug nuts and drove off wondering what the CLUNK CLUNK noise was.

Some more here...
1) Drove the car on ramps on soft lawn (wasnt thinking it was that soft!) worked under the car and was thinking why the car is getting lower and lower... thinking it was an punchure in tyre... I wasnt thinking so kept working until the sump was touching my tummy and I realised it was sinking... so got out quickly and ****ted myself... Lucky! (commodore)
2) starting up engine with breaker bar to undo the crank bolt - acceptable!!!! - everyone done that... (subaru)
3) starting up a car without fuel lines being attached - oops! (Camira)
4) undoing the wheel nuts without the car being jacked up on slight slope - car started to lean over... oops! (not subaru)
5) Towed a trailer while it wasnt locked - it was just hooked on, went over speed hump bang bang bang.. but lucky the tow ball was able to catch it! (had safety chain attached) (Holden WB Panel Van with caged trailer)
6) Started up engine without oil (engine & gearbox) & water to move it (not Subaru)
7) yeah common thing - positive on negative terminal and negative on positive..... (cannot remember what happened (i think something went wrong way...) but no damage caused...)
........ still more to come - cant think of any more....
Cheers

Wow, reading your posts can be a struggle, still not sure what this bit means?

I've done a few, most recently it was putting the front stabiliser bar on the wrong way.

Most stupid thing I've done is TT a L series and put dirty big tyres on it:P
Ohh, and forgot to tighten trans cooler and p/s lines on it.. Mmm messy.
Also jacked rear car up by control arm to undo lower shock bolt without using a jack stand under car body.....while i was under it.. yeah..not pretty.

In terms of working on cars I have not had to many incidents (finger crossed, touch wood, etc etc) however Subarino has a picture of a recent mishap that may (or may not) surface. (Hint – I was not the only board member that this happened to last year, I think have a look at 1 of the members from the Tassie crew).
Toyota 105 Series LandCruiser (that nobody on here wants to really hear about).
RX Touring Wagon - fitted out for 4WDing (currently collecting dust).
RX Project - will be road only at this stage (and currently taking way to long to finish).

this isnt anything to do with engine wise or anything but its still stupid by my means:

driving to work the other day, bug on the windscreen, started tappin at it, still wouldnt go away, hit it with the palm of my hand, huge crack all over winscreen, so i swore a bit and yea, went into windscreen place to get replaced, get call today, has rust all over top of where windscreen sits, needs to be fixed first, take it to panelbeater (dads mate) is fixing that tonite, also needs to rear window removing and rust fix and replacing, DAMN CARS!!!!!

I've done a few over the years but can't think of any mine at the moment, but remember being inside house when suddenly WHOOF, me older brother crankin' over his old Ford with fuel disconnected and leads also. Result was a record run for the hose :) !

A mate was fitting the brace to the underside of boot spare wheel well on an ED when fitting a tow bar, just 1/8 rivet drill bit IS enough to root the tyre still in the well :) :)

thought of one of me own.... used a cable puller winch for engine removal many times. It needs a two finger action to unlock it and let things down. Not thinking I had a donk midair and released when I shoulda done something else and WHOOSH, the engine was suddenly on the floor - lucky i had the big tyre underneath !!

Ok...here goes....And I'm 52 soon.

1. Took dads Valiant 2 door to dump with trailer..No safety chain. On the way back, the trailer comes off and first instinct is to put the brakes on. Realised trailer was catching up. Looked ahead and saw driver coming towards me with eyes as big as saucers as he sees trailer passing me coming toward him.

2. Loaned my mothers mini to friend in Brisbane whilst I flew to Mckay for wedding. He did favour for me and picked it up at Brisbane airport and kept it for the weekend. I arrive back from Mackay with mum there to pick up her precious mini. Mate arrives and says mini has been involved in incident and has a "dent" in the mudguard. Went to panel beaters and horrified to see mini with flat front guard, windscreen destroyed and pitch in the roof like an arabs tent. Car totalled. Mum said many years later that she never forgave me for that.

3. Hit starter button on honda 750 four whilst on side stand (oops)

4. Rode qwakka 900 into mates house and parked in loungeroom. He asked me to leave. (sorry off topic) I'm sure there's more that of reallocated to the back of my head.
